Chapter 3: The Interview No Résumé Could Win

Chapter 3: The Interview No Résumé Could Win
Instead of escorting Clara into the standard interview room, Ethan led her into a quiet conference room overlooking downtown Chicago.
A single table stood in the center.
No intimidating panel.
No rehearsed questions.
No stopwatch.
Just two chairs.
Ethan placed her résumé on the table but didn't open it.
"You spent weeks preparing for this interview, didn't you?"
Clara laughed softly.
"I practiced every answer."
"Ironed my dress twice."
"And probably memorized every fact about our company."
She smiled.
"Pretty much."
He leaned back.
"I'm not interested in any of those answers anymore."
She looked confused.
"I already know the one thing I needed to know."
He folded his hands.
"You thought helping Lily might cost you everything."
"Yes."
"You did it anyway."
She nodded.
"I couldn't live with myself if I walked away."
Ethan smiled.
"My father built this company."
"When I inherited it, he gave me one piece of advice."
He paused.
"'Never hire the smartest person in the room if they'll step over someone lying on the floor.'"
Clara remained silent.
"Today," Ethan continued, "you demonstrated something no résumé can prove."
"What?"
"Character."
At that moment, there was a knock on the door.
The Human Resources Director entered carrying a folder.
"I'm sorry to interrupt."
She looked between them.
"The Operations Assistant position has officially been filled."
Clara felt her heart sink.
"There it is," she whispered.
"I was too late."
Ethan didn't appear surprised.
"I know."
He stood and walked toward the window.
"Fortunately..."
He turned back.
"I wasn't interviewing you for that job anymore."
Clara frowned.
"I'm sorry?"
"The Operations Assistant position pays fifty-eight thousand dollars."
"Yes."
"I have another opening."
He slid a different folder across the table.
It bore a new title.
Executive Operations Coordinator
Salary:
Eighty-five thousand dollars.
Full benefits.
Professional development.
Leadership mentoring.
Performance bonuses.
Clara stared at the page without speaking.
"I don't understand."
Ethan smiled.
"I need someone I can trust."
"Skills can be taught."
"Integrity cannot."
Tears welled in Clara's eyes.
"You barely know me."
"I know enough."
"You protected the most important person in my life."
He glanced toward the family photo sitting on the bookshelf.
"And you did it when nobody was watching."
That mattered more than any interview answer ever could.
Clara finally whispered,
"I'd be honored."
Ethan extended his hand.
"Then welcome to Whitmore Capital."

This time, when Clara shook his hand, it wasn't as an applicant.
It was as a colleague.
