Chapter 2 – The Interview She Never Expected
Ethan Whitmore stared at Clara for several long seconds.
"Bennett?" he repeated.
"You were supposed to interview with Whitmore Capital this morning."
Clara blinked in surprise.
"You... know my name?"
A faint smile crossed Ethan's face.
"I own the company."
The words hung in the air.
Clara suddenly understood.
Lily's last name.
The forty-second floor.
Whitmore Capital.
Everything connected at once.
She instinctively looked at the clock.
8:37.
"I'm sorry," she said quietly. "I know I missed my interview."
Ethan glanced at the résumé folder in her hands.
"You called HR."
"I did."
"They told you not to come."
"They said I'd be marked as a no-show."
He sighed, clearly unhappy with the answer.
"I'll deal with that later."
Lily tugged on her father's sleeve.
"Daddy, Miss Clara stayed with me the whole time."
"I know."
"She even gave me tissues."
"I know."
"And she missed something important."
Ethan looked back at Clara.
"I think I understand exactly what she missed."
For a moment, no one spoke.
Finally Ethan smiled.
"I still need to get Lily home."
He reached into his wallet and handed Clara a simple business card.
No gold lettering.
No flashy design.
Just his name.
Ethan Whitmore
Chief Executive Officer
On the back he wrote one sentence.
Be in my office at 10:00 a.m.
Clara looked up.
"My interview?"
"No."
He smiled again.
"A conversation."
At exactly ten o'clock, Clara walked into Whitmore Capital's headquarters.
Everything inside looked polished.
Marble floors.
Glass walls.
Employees dressed in tailored suits.
She suddenly felt very aware of her inexpensive heels.
The receptionist smiled warmly.
"Mr. Whitmore is expecting you."
She was escorted directly to the executive floor.
No waiting room.
No paperwork.
No nervous competition.
Just Ethan standing beside the window overlooking downtown Chicago.
He turned as she entered.
"You came."
"You asked me to."
"I hoped you would."
He motioned toward a chair.
"I've already read your résumé."
Clara frowned.
"You have?"
"I read every finalist's résumé myself."
"You do?"
"I believe hiring changes lives."
His words surprised her.
Then he asked a question she hadn't rehearsed.
"If you had walked away from Lily this morning... would you have made it to your interview?"
Clara hesitated.
"Probably."
"So why didn't you?"
She looked down.
"My mother always says that success isn't worth much if it costs your humanity."
Ethan leaned back.
