Chapter 11 - The Hidden Safe

The morning sun cast long, golden shadows across the sprawling lawn of the Sterling estate.
It was the first time Hannah had returned to the mansion since the night she was brutally attacked.
Yellow police tape still crisscrossed the heavy glass doors leading to the pool patio.
Hannah took a deep, shaky breath as she stepped out of Ethan's black SUV.
The sheer size of the mansion suddenly felt suffocating and oppressive.

Every pristine window seemed to stare down at her like a cold, unblinking eye.
Ethan walked around the hood of the car and gently took her good hand in his.
"We don't have to do this today if you aren't ready," Ethan said softly.
Hannah shook her head firmly, her eyes fixed on the massive front doors.
"We need to find those original Chicago inspector reports before her lawyers do."
"If Victor Vance knows about them, Beatrice definitely has them hidden somewhere inside this house."
They walked up the wide stone steps and unlocked the heavy mahogany front door.
The interior of the house was completely silent and smelled faintly of expensive floral perfume.
It was a lingering, sickening reminder of the woman who had terrorized Hannah for months.
"The police searched the main office and the master bedroom," Ethan explained, looking around the grand foyer.
"They didn't find any hidden wall safes or secret compartments."
Hannah closed her eyes, trying to put herself inside the mind of her cruel tormentor.
"Beatrice is incredibly arrogant and deeply narcissistic," Hannah muttered, thinking out loud.
"She wouldn't hide her most valuable leverage in a dusty basement or a boring office."
"She would want it somewhere she could admire it every single day."
Ethan's eyes suddenly lit up with a sudden realization.
"The private wine cellar in the east wing," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a whisper.
"My father built it, but Beatrice completely remodeled it after he passed away."
"She claimed she needed a climate-controlled sanctuary for her rare vintage collections."
"She never let anyone else go down there, not even the cleaning staff."
They hurried down the long, marble-floored hallway toward the east wing of the estate.
Ethan unlocked the heavy wrought-iron door leading down into the dark, stone-lined cellar.
He flicked the light switch, illuminating rows upon rows of dusty, expensive wine bottles.
The air down here was cold, damp, and smelled heavily of aged oak.
They began systematically checking the wooden wine racks, pulling on bottles and pushing on the stone walls.
Ten minutes passed in tense, frustrating silence.
Hannah ran her fingers along the back wall, feeling the rough texture of the decorative masonry.
Suddenly, her hand brushed against a small, rectangular stone that felt completely smooth.
She pushed hard against it, and a loud mechanical click echoed through the quiet cellar.
A section of the heavy stone wall slowly swung outward on hidden steel hinges.
Behind the false wall was a sleek, modern digital safe embedded directly into the concrete.

"You found it," Ethan gasped, rushing over to her side.
"Now we just have to figure out how to open a military-grade security vault."
