Chapter 1: The Ring Never Lied

Chapter 1: The Ring Never Lied
Silence swallowed the mansion.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
The silver signet ring rested in the blonde woman's trembling hand, its engraved crest gleaming beneath the crystal chandelier.
Her fingers shook.
"I... I gave this ring to my baby."
The words barely escaped her lips.
The older woman stepped closer, tears already filling her eyes.
"It was tied to Emily's blanket the night she disappeared."
Every face turned toward the maid.
Clara stood frozen, unable to understand why these wealthy strangers were suddenly looking at her with grief instead of contempt.
"I don't know anything," she whispered. "I've had that ring for as long as I can remember."
The blonde woman's knees nearly gave out.
Twenty-three years.
Twenty-three birthdays.
Twenty-three Christmas mornings spent wondering whether her little girl had survived.
She reached toward Clara's face with trembling fingers.
"Who raised you?"
Clara swallowed hard.
"No one."
"I grew up in foster homes."
"I was told I was found outside a church."
The words struck like lightning.
The family matriarch gasped.
"Outside St. Michael's..."
She turned toward her daughter.
"That's only three miles from where Emily disappeared."
The room erupted into whispers.
The blonde woman burst into tears.
"I'm your mother."
Clara instinctively stepped backward.
"No..."
"No, you're not."
"My mother wouldn't have abandoned me."
Those words shattered everyone in the room.
The blonde woman collapsed onto the marble floor, sobbing uncontrollably.
May you like
"I never abandoned you."
"I've been searching for you every single day."
