Chapter 7 - The Matriarch's Countermove.

Adrian answered the prepaid phone with both hands shaking despite every effort to stop them.
"Elise?"
There was no voice.
Only faint static.
Then a sound like wind moving across an open microphone.
"Elise, it's Adrian."
Nora stood beside him in the maintenance building, watching his face.
A click sounded on the line.
Then a recording began.
Elise's voice.
"If this phone rings, someone found the locker."
Adrian closed his eyes.
It was not a live call.
The hope that had surged through him collapsed, but he kept listening.
"The call is automated."
"I set it up with a service that keeps trying once the phone reconnects to a network."
"If Adrian is hearing this, I need you to know Bellweather is not safe."
Nora looked at the map in her hand.
Elise continued.
"The blue gate is a marker, not an invitation."
"Do not enter the main house first."
"Find the old pump house behind the north field."
"There is a file box under the floor."
A pause.
"And Adrian, if you are really the one hearing this, I am sorry I doubted you."
His face tightened.
"But I needed you to doubt them."
The message ended.
A second later, the phone displayed CALL COMPLETE.
Nora exhaled.
"She planned for everything."
Adrian stared at the screen.
"Because she thought no one was coming in time."
He took the map.
"We're going to Bellweather."
Nora glanced outside.
"Not yet."
He looked at her.
"If someone knows this phone just connected, they may know this locker was opened."
Adrian understood immediately.
An automated service could create logs.
A compromised account could create an alert.
The cut padlock suddenly felt less accidental.
"We leave now."
They reached the car.
Before Adrian started the engine, his regular phone came alive with notifications.
Seventeen missed calls.
Nine messages.
Three from his assistant, Miles Garner.
Two from outside counsel.
Four from board members.
One from Mrs. Carter.
One from Vivienne.
Adrian opened Mrs. Carter's message first.
Please call immediately.
He did.
She answered on the first ring.
"Mr. Mercer."
"Is Theo okay?"
"He's safe."
Adrian breathed again.
"What's wrong?"
Mrs. Carter lowered her voice.
"Your mother called an emergency family foundation meeting for noon."
"Mr. Garner arrived with two attorneys."
"They've been in the library for an hour."
Adrian looked at the dashboard clock.
Eleven twelve.
"Why?"
"I don't know."
"But Mrs. Mercer asked me to prepare the east guest suite for a child-care evaluator."
Adrian's body went cold.
"What evaluator?"
"She didn't say."
Nora saw his face change.
"What happened?"
Adrian held up a hand.
"Mrs. Carter, no one speaks to Theo without me present."
"No one takes him anywhere."
"Understood."
"And call the outside security officers into the house."
"They're already inside."
Good.
Adrian ended the call and opened Vivienne's message.
It contained a single sentence.
Come home before you make this worse.
Then Miles called again.
Adrian answered.
"Tell me what she's doing."
Miles hesitated.
"Good morning to you too."
"Miles."
The assistant dropped the joke.
"Your mother has requested an emergency vote regarding your authority over Mercer Foundation operations."
"On what grounds?"
"Concern about judgment."
Adrian almost laughed.
"Of course."
"She has also circulated a memorandum suggesting you've become emotionally compromised by Elise's disappearance and are making unsupported accusations against staff."
Nora stared at him.
Vivienne had moved faster than either of them expected.
"Who drafted the memorandum?"
"Charles."
Adrian gripped the steering wheel.
Charles Mercer.
The same family attorney Elise had mentioned on the recording.
"Is Charles there?"
"On video."
"Miles, listen carefully."
Adrian looked through the windshield at the abandoned maintenance building.
"Do not give anyone access to my office."
There was a pause.
"Why?"
"Because I said so."
"Adrian, if there is something I need to know—"
"There is."
"And I will tell you when I know who I can trust."
Silence.
Miles sounded hurt when he answered.
"We've known each other since college."
"Then you'll understand why I'm asking you to do one thing without questions."
"Keep them out of my office."
Miles exhaled.
"All right."
The call ended.
Nora looked at Adrian.
"Do you trust him?"
Adrian stared at the phone.
"I did yesterday."
They drove back toward Hawthorne Hall instead of Bellweather.
Adrian hated delaying the search, but Vivienne had made Theo part of the fight.
That changed the priority.
The mansion looked peaceful when they arrived.
Two black vehicles sat near the front steps.
Inside, the foyer was crowded with people in expensive suits speaking in low voices.
Vivienne stood near the fireplace in an ivory blouse and dark trousers, perfectly composed.
Theo sat on the staircase beside Mrs. Carter, holding a wooden horse from one of his toy sets.
The moment he saw Adrian, he ran down.
"Daddy."
Adrian picked him up.
Theo wrapped both arms around his neck.
"Grandma said a lady was coming to ask if you're sleeping."
Adrian looked at Vivienne over Theo's shoulder.
"Did she?"
Vivienne walked closer.
"The evaluator is a family wellness consultant."
"Cancel her."
"She is already on her way."
"Then she can turn around."
Vivienne smiled faintly.
"You see how unreasonable that sounds."
Nora stepped beside Adrian.
Vivienne's gaze settled on her.
"And you brought Miss Hale back."
"She never left."
"For now."
Adrian handed Theo to Mrs. Carter.
"Take him to the music room."
Theo frowned.
"I want to stay."
Adrian kissed the top of his head.
"I need to do boring grown-up things."
"More boring than secret doors?"
Despite everything, Nora almost smiled.
"Much more boring."
Theo allowed Mrs. Carter to lead him away.
Adrian turned to his mother.
"Library."
Vivienne did not move.
"The meeting has already begun."
"Then they'll enjoy the surprise."
He walked past her.
The library doors opened onto twelve board members seated around a long table.
A large screen showed Charles Mercer's lined face from Florida.
Miles sat near the far end with a laptop.
Two attorneys Adrian recognized occupied seats beside Vivienne's chair.
Conversation stopped when Adrian entered.
Nora remained near the doors.
Vivienne followed.
"As you can see, Adrian has returned."
Adrian pulled out the chair opposite her.
"Continue."
One board member cleared his throat.
"We were discussing temporary administrative measures."
"Meaning removing me."
Charles spoke from the screen.
"Meaning protecting the foundation while you deal with a personal crisis."
Adrian looked at him.
"Funny choice of words."
Charles frowned.
"Excuse me?"
"Elise used the word protect too."
Vivienne's eyes sharpened.
Adrian continued.
"She also used your name."
The room became still.
Charles leaned back.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Then this will be educational."
Adrian opened his briefcase.
Vivienne's gaze dropped to it.
He removed a printed transcript from one of Elise's recordings.
He had intentionally left out the account numbers and Bellweather references.
He distributed copies around the table.
The members began reading.
Vivienne did not touch hers.
Charles stared at the screen.
"Where did this come from?"
"My wife."
"It could be fabricated."
"You decided that before reading it."
Charles looked annoyed.
"I know Elise was unwell."
Adrian leaned forward.
"There it is again."
"The phrase everyone was taught to use."
Vivienne interrupted.
"This meeting is not a courtroom."
"No."
Adrian nodded.
"But you may want to start thinking about one."
Several board members shifted uncomfortably.
Vivienne's face cooled.
"Are you threatening me?"
"I'm asking a simple question."
Adrian looked around the table.
"Did anyone here authorize placing Elise Mercer in a private facility under the name Lena Gray?"
No one spoke.
Miles looked up sharply.
One older board member whispered.
"What?"
Adrian turned toward Charles on the screen.
"Did you?"
Charles's face hardened.
"I advised the family during a health emergency."
"Did you authorize false paperwork?"
"That is a reckless characterization."
"Did you sign anything?"
Charles looked toward Vivienne's camera feed, not Adrian.
Adrian saw it.
So did Nora.
Vivienne finally sat.
"This is enough."
"No."
A woman at the middle of the table spoke.
Helen Ward, chair of the foundation audit committee.
She held the transcript in both hands.
"It isn't."
Vivienne looked at her.
Helen continued.
"If Elise was admitted under an alias and foundation transfers are involved, the board needs an independent review."
Charles spoke immediately.
"That would be premature."
Helen's eyebrows rose.
"You are outside counsel."
"You don't decide what's premature for the audit committee."
Adrian watched Vivienne's control slip another inch.
The emergency meeting had been designed to isolate him.
Instead, she had created an audience.
Vivienne stood.
"Fine."
"Commission your review."
"But until it concludes, Adrian should be removed from operational authority because he is personally involved."
Helen considered it.
Adrian understood the trap.
If he fought too hard, he looked desperate to control evidence.
If he accepted, Vivienne gained time.
He chose a third option.
"I will voluntarily step back from foundation transactions for seven days."
Vivienne's eyes narrowed.
"On one condition."
"Grant Sayer is suspended from all estate and foundation security access during the same period."
Grant stood near the wall.
Everyone looked at him.
Vivienne's voice sharpened.
"Absolutely not."
Helen asked.
"Why not?"
Vivienne had no clean answer.
Adrian looked at Grant.
"Do you object?"
Grant's jaw worked.
Then he removed his security badge and placed it on the table.
"No."
Vivienne stared at him.
Something passed between them.
Not loyalty.
Not exactly.
Fear.
The meeting ended forty minutes later with the independent review approved.
Charles disconnected without saying goodbye.
Vivienne left through the side door.
Miles stayed behind.
"You could have told me."
Adrian gathered the transcripts.
"I just did."
"Not like this."
"I needed to know how everyone reacted."
Miles looked toward Nora.
"Including me?"
Adrian met his eyes.
"Including everyone."
Miles shook his head and walked out.
Nora waited until the door closed.
"He didn't like being tested."
"Most people don't."
"Did he pass?"
Adrian looked at the empty doorway.
"I don't know."
His phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
The emergency board meeting taught Adrian something Elise had understood before him.
Vivienne's power did not depend on shouting or issuing obvious threats.
It depended on framing the first version of events.
Once she called Adrian emotionally compromised, every objection risked sounding like proof.
Once she called Elise unstable, every attempt Elise made to defend herself could be described as escalation.
The method was elegant because the target helped reinforce the accusation simply by resisting it.
Helen Ward disrupted that pattern by refusing the frame entirely.
She did not ask whether Adrian seemed calm enough to be trusted.
She asked whether the documents could be independently verified.
That single change moved the room from personality to evidence.
Adrian watched Vivienne notice it.
For years, his mother had controlled meetings by deciding what question everyone was answering.
Now someone else had changed the question.
Adrian realized that transparency was not only about revealing facts.
It was also about preventing one powerful person from defining what counted as relevant.
He opened it.
A photograph appeared.
The image had been taken through the music room window less than five minutes earlier.
Theo sat on the carpet beside Mrs. Carter.
Under the photograph was one sentence.
Stop looking for Bellweather, or the next picture will be taken closer.
Adrian's blood went cold.
Nora read over his shoulder.
May you like
"Someone is still on the property."
Adrian ran for the door.
