Chapter 2: The Man They Never Expected

Chapter 2: The Man They Never Expected

The silence that followed felt heavier than the marble walls surrounding them.

Santiago stared at the man standing in the doorway, unable to place him at first.

Then recognition struck.

His face drained of color.

"Mr... Mr. Salazar?"

Even Beatriz nearly dropped her wine glass.

There was only one Ricardo Salazar in Mexico.

The founder of Grupo Salazar.

The billionaire whose investments had rescued banks, built hospitals, and quietly decided the fate of entire corporations.

The man Santiago had spent years trying—and failing—to secure a business meeting with.

Ricardo didn't answer immediately.

His eyes never left his daughter.

Valeria's swollen belly.

The bruise beginning to darken across her cheek.

The trembling hands she kept wrapped around her unborn son.

Every father fears the day someone hurts his child.

Ricardo had imagined many possibilities.

Nothing had prepared him for this.

He slowly removed his gloves.

"Sweetheart."

His voice softened instantly.

"Come here."

Valeria's composure shattered.

For weeks she had forced herself not to cry.

Now she crossed the foyer in tears, collapsing into her father's embrace.

"I'm sorry..." she whispered.

"I'm so sorry I hid everything."

Ricardo wrapped one arm around her carefully.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

His eyes lifted toward Santiago.

"But someone else certainly does."

The temperature inside the mansion seemed to drop.

Santiago forced an awkward smile.

"I think there's been a misunderstanding."

Ricardo raised one finger.

One of the attorneys stepped forward and opened a leather briefcase.

Inside were photographs.

Medical reports.

Financial statements.

Copies of the forged psychiatric evaluations.

Police-ready evidence.

And hours of video recordings.

Santiago frowned.

"What is this?"

The attorney answered calmly.

"Evidence collected over the past twenty-three days."

Beatriz's confidence disappeared.

"Impossible."

"The cameras inside this house belong to us."

"No," Valeria said quietly.

"They belong to me."

She reached into her purse and placed a small silver clock on the table.

"It wasn't decoration."

"It was recording every conversation."

Santiago lunged toward it.

One security guard intercepted him before he could take two steps.

"You set me up?"

Valeria looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

"I documented what you chose to become."

The second attorney placed another folder on the marble table.

"Mr. Rivas."

"As of this morning, Grupo Salazar has legally acquired every outstanding debt owed by Rivas Development."

Santiago blinked.

"What?"

"That isn't possible."

"It happened at nine fourteen this morning."

"The banks agreed immediately."

Ricardo finally spoke.

"You've been bankrupt for months."

"You simply didn't know it yet."

Beatriz's face turned white.

"Our investors—"

"Have already withdrawn."

"Our suppliers?"

"Canceled."

"Our board?"

"They resigned an hour ago."

Santiago felt his knees weaken.

Everything...

Everything he had built...

Gone.

"No..."

Ricardo's expression never changed.

"You spent years convincing my daughter she was powerless."

"Tonight you'll discover what real power looks like."

One of the attorneys handed Santiago another document.

He scanned the first page.

Emergency asset freeze.

Corporate fraud investigation.

Protective order.

Domestic violence charges.

Attempted conspiracy to commit unlawful confinement.

His breathing became uneven.

"You can't destroy my life."

Ricardo answered without emotion.

"I didn't."

"You did."

Just then another voice echoed through the foyer.

"Mexico City Police."

Six officers entered with signed warrants.

The lead detective approached Santiago.

"Santiago Rivas."

"You are under arrest."

Beatriz stepped between them.

"There must be some mistake."

The detective handed her another warrant.

"No, ma'am."

"You're coming with us too."

For the first time in years...

Neither of them had anything left to say.
