CHAPTER 2: THE LITTLE GIRL WHO SAW WHAT OTHERS DIDN'T

The following morning, Lucas woke inside his bedroom.

Doctors surrounded him.

Security guards stood outside every door.

But Lucas wasn't listening to any of them.

“Where's the little girl?”

The room fell silent.

His head of security answered.

“The maid's daughter, sir.”

“Bring her.”

Minutes later, Lily entered holding her stuffed rabbit.

Her mother, Emma Carter, stood nervously beside her.

Emma had worked in the mansion for only six months.

A widowed single mother trying to survive.

“Thank you,” Lucas said quietly.

Lily smiled.

“You're breathing now.”

Lucas almost laughed.

Nobody had spoken to him that simply in years.

Then Lily looked around the room.

Her smile disappeared.

She pointed toward a silver watch sitting on Lucas's nightstand.

“The scary man touched that.”

Everyone froze.

“What scary man?” Lucas asked.

Lily shrugged.

“The one hiding behind his smile.”

Emma immediately apologized.

“I'm so sorry. She's imaginative.”

But Lucas felt something strange.

“Who was it?”

Lily pointed directly at Adrian Russo standing beside the window.

The room went cold.

Adrian laughed.

“Kids say funny things.”

But Lily shook her head.

“He was here last night.”

Adrian's smile faltered for half a second.

Then Lily said something nobody expected.

“He has the same smell.”

Lucas frowned.

“The same smell?”

Lily nodded.

“The smell from your old toy truck downstairs.”

Lucas suddenly stood up.

There was only one old toy truck left in the mansion.

Daniel's favorite toy.

It had been recovered from the crash site.

Impossible.

Lucas raced downstairs.

Inside the truck's hidden compartment, he discovered something he'd never noticed before.

A tiny GPS tracker.

Attached beneath it.

Someone had been tracking Isabella's movements.

Someone close enough to enter the house whenever they wanted.

Someone Daniel trusted.

May you like

Lucas slowly turned around.

Adrian's face had gone pale.
