CHAPTER 1: THE SECRET ELEANOR BURIED THIRTY YEARS AGO

CHAPTER 1: THE SECRET ELEANOR BURIED THIRTY YEARS AGO
Nobody spoke.
The whispers that had filled the room seconds earlier vanished into a suffocating silence.
Eleanor Whitmore stared at the little girl.
At the locket.
At the photograph.
Then back at the child standing in front of her.
"What's your name?" Eleanor finally asked.
The girl answered immediately.
"Sophie."
"And your mother's name?"
Sophie swallowed.
"Emily Carter."
The name hit Eleanor harder than any public scandal, any financial collapse, or any threat she had ever faced.
Emily.
Her younger sister.
The sister she had not seen in thirty years.
The sister she believed had disappeared forever.
Eleanor slowly stood up from her chair.
People around the room exchanged nervous glances.
No one had ever seen her look shaken before.
Not once.
"What did your mother tell you?" Eleanor asked quietly.
Sophie hesitated.
"She said you loved her once."
Eleanor's fingers trembled.
"She said something happened a long time ago that destroyed your family."
A tear unexpectedly formed in Eleanor's eye.
The room collectively gasped.
The Iron Lady of Manhattan never cried.
Ever.
"My mother is sick," Sophie continued.
"Very sick."
"She told me that if anything happened to her, I had to find you."
Eleanor sat back down slowly.
Then Sophie reached into her coat again.
This time, she handed over a folded letter.
The paper was worn from years of being carried around.
On the front were four simple words.
For Eleanor. If she forgives me.
Eleanor opened it.
And immediately recognized Emily's handwriting.
Dear Ellie,
If you're reading this, then life has finally forced us to stop running from the truth.
I never hated you.
I hated what happened to us.
Dad chose your future and destroyed mine.
And we both paid for his decision.
Please don't punish Sophie for our mistakes.
She's innocent.
She's your daughter too.
Eleanor froze.
The entire world around her disappeared.
Your daughter too.
Her hands began shaking violently.
Because thirty years ago, one terrible decision had changed everything.
May you like
And nobody in this room knew the truth.
Not even Sophie.
