Chapter 2: The Collapse

The next morning, the house felt different.

Not because anything had changed physically—

but because power had shifted hands without anyone noticing it move.

Noah sat at the kitchen table, phone in hand, dialing rapidly.

“This is ridiculous,” he muttered. “There has to be a mistake in those documents.”

Ava walked past him, pouring coffee.

“There isn’t.”

He looked up sharply.

“You did this behind my back?”

Ava paused.

“No,” she said. “I did it while you weren’t paying attention. There’s a difference.”

Diane, who had been silent since last night, finally spoke.

“We should contact legal counsel immediately. This is clearly—”

Ava interrupted without raising her voice.

“You already did.”

Diane froze.

Ava took a sip of coffee.

“And they confirmed it.”

Claire shifted uncomfortably on the couch.

“I don’t want to be part of a fight,” she said quietly. “I just need stability for my baby.”

Ava looked at her.

“For the first time,” she said, “we agree on something.”

Then Ava placed another envelope on the table.

Noah didn’t touch it.

“What now?”

Ava’s expression remained steady.

“Now you decide how fast you want this to fall apart.”

Noah laughed once—sharp, disbelieving.

“You’re threatening me?”

Ava tilted her head slightly.

“No,” she said. “I’m informing you.”

Lily watched from the stairs, tears still in her eyes—but now mixed with something new.

Understanding.

Noah wasn’t in control anymore.

And for the first time, neither was anyone else in his family.
