Chapter 5 — The Video That Changed Everything

The television screen glowed softly at the front of the chapel.
No one looked away.
The timestamp in the corner read:
October 14 — 8:17 P.M.
There I was.
Ten years younger.
My hair was longer, my face thinner, and I held a neatly wrapped gift with both hands.
A small smile crossed my face as I rang the doorbell.
Seconds later, the front door opened.
Richard stepped outside.
The video had no audio, but his expression said enough.
He looked over both shoulders before stepping onto the porch and pulling the door nearly shut behind him.
He never invited me inside.
On the screen, I held out the present.
Richard didn't take it.
Instead, he folded his arms and shook his head.
I tried to explain something.
I pointed toward the house.
Toward my mother.
Richard's lips moved sharply.
His face hardened.
Then came the moment that stole the breath from the room.
He pointed toward the street.
Telling me to leave.
I didn't argue.
I simply nodded.
Then I handed him an envelope.
He accepted it.
Waited until I walked down the steps.
And dropped both the envelope and the gift into a large trash bin beside the garage.
A collective gasp echoed through the chapel.
Mrs. Collins covered her eyes.
"Oh, my God..."
Someone whispered, "He threw it away."
Another voice answered, "Right in front of her."
Vanessa stared at the screen without blinking.
"No..."
The footage continued.
Richard wheeled the trash bin behind the house.
Minutes later, my mother opened the front door.
She looked around the porch.
Confused.
She searched the steps.
She even looked toward the driveway.
Then she disappeared back inside.
She never knew I'd been there.
The screen faded to black.
A second timestamp appeared.
December 24 — 6:42 P.M.
Christmas Eve.
Again, I stood on the porch.
This time I carried a large gift bag and a bouquet of white lilies.
My favorite flowers had always been hers too.
I smiled nervously.
I looked hopeful.
The door opened.
Richard answered again.
The scene repeated itself.
I offered him the gifts.
He blocked the doorway.
I tried to hand him a Christmas card.
He refused.
After a brief exchange, I gently placed the bag beside the front door.
Then I walked away.
Richard waited until my car disappeared.
He picked up the flowers.
Pulled the card from the gift bag.
Looked at it for only a second.
Then tossed everything into the trash.
The lilies scattered across the driveway.
Someone in the chapel quietly began to cry.
Vanessa shook her head over and over.
"No..."
She turned toward Richard.
"You said she stopped coming."
Richard didn't answer.
His eyes never left the floor.
Daniel Mercer spoke softly.
"There are twenty-seven recordings like these."
The words settled over the room like a heavy blanket.
"Birthdays."
He clicked the remote.
Another clip appeared.
"Mother's Days."
Another.
"Thanksgiving."
Another.
"Anniversaries."
Every holiday.
Every important date.
Year after year.
The pattern never changed.
I came.
Richard answered the door.
My gifts disappeared before my mother ever saw them.
The congregation watched in stunned silence.
Some wiped away tears.
Others stared at Richard with open disbelief.
Daniel paused the video.
"I should clarify something."
He faced the audience.
"Mrs. Vale didn't discover these recordings until nineteen months ago."
He clicked to another video.
This one was from inside the house.
The camera overlooked the front hallway.
My mother stood near the staircase, smiling.
She was carrying a tray of cookies.
Richard entered the room.
Although there was no sound, everyone could read his lips.
Emily didn't come.
My mother's smile slowly disappeared.
She looked toward the front door one last time.
Then lowered her head.
The tray nearly slipped from her hands.
Vanessa began crying.
Actual tears.
She stared at the screen as if it belonged to another family.
"I believed him..."
No one responded.
Daniel let the silence linger.
Then he reached into the evidence folder again.
"This wasn't the only deception."
He removed a thick stack of financial records.
Richard looked up immediately.
"What does money have to do with any of this?"
Daniel met his gaze.
"Quite a bit."
He laid the documents across the podium.
"Mrs. Vale hired a forensic accountant after discovering unusual withdrawals from her personal accounts."
Richard's face went completely still.
"The investigation covered the last twelve years."
Daniel lifted the first report.
"During that time, more than $2.8 million was transferred from Mrs. Vale's separate inheritance into accounts controlled solely by Richard Vale."
The chapel erupted.
"What?"
"Two point eight million?"
"That's impossible!"
Vanessa stumbled backward until she reached the front pew.
She looked at Richard as though she no longer recognized him.
"Dad..."
Richard finally spoke.
"Margaret approved every transfer."
Daniel calmly shook his head.
"According to the bank records..."
He opened another folder.
"...many of those authorization forms were signed on days when Mrs. Vale was hospitalized."
The whispers became louder.
Daniel continued.
"Three signatures have already been examined by a certified forensic document analyst."
He looked directly at Richard.
"The preliminary opinion states there is strong evidence that they were forged."
Richard's breathing grew heavier.
His hands clenched into fists.
"This is outrageous."
Daniel didn't react.
"No."
He slid one final document onto the podium.
"This is the reason Mrs. Vale amended her will six weeks before her death."
Every person in the chapel leaned forward.
Even Pastor Williams.
Even Vanessa.
Daniel rested his hand on the sealed envelope.
"Mrs. Vale instructed me not to read the revised will until the evidence of deception had been presented."
He looked slowly around the chapel.
"I believe that condition has now been satisfied."
Richard took one desperate step forward.
"You can't do this here."
Daniel's expression remained calm.
"I can."
He picked up the envelope bearing Margaret Vale's signature.
"The next words your wife wrote..."
He looked directly at Richard.
"...are the ones you've spent ten years hoping no one would ever hear."

With deliberate care, Daniel broke the final seal.
The last wishes of Margaret Vale were finally about to be revealed.
