Chapter 2: The Word That Broke the Silence

Chapter 2: The Word That Broke the Silence

The ballroom remained frozen.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

The only sound was Noah's uneven breathing as he clung to Marina's uniform, refusing to let go.

Logan Mercer felt the world tilt beneath his feet.

"Mommy."

The word echoed inside his mind, louder than the orchestra, louder than the whispers that were already spreading across the room.

Vanessa recovered first.

"What is the meaning of this?" she snapped, marching across the marble floor. "Get your hands off him!"

She reached for Noah.

The boy screamed.

Not a cry.

Not a whimper.

A scream filled with raw terror.

"No!"

It was his second word.

He buried his face deeper against Marina's shoulder, trembling so violently that Marina instinctively wrapped one arm around him.

"I... I'm sorry, sir," Marina whispered, looking at Logan. "I didn't do anything. He just ran to me."

"I know," Logan answered quietly.

For the first time in years, he wasn't looking at Vanessa.

He was looking at his son.

Really looking.

Noah's tiny fingers had turned white from gripping Marina's apron.

His breathing slowed only when she gently rubbed his back.

The same child who had rejected every therapist, every nanny, every family friend...

Had calmed instantly in the arms of a woman he supposedly barely knew.

Something didn't fit.

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"Children get confused. He's probably pretending."

Noah lifted his tear-filled eyes.

"No..."

His voice shook.

"Don't... make... me..."

The room fell silent again.

Logan knelt beside his son.

"Noah."

The little boy wouldn't look at him.

Instead, he whispered into Marina's shoulder.

"Please..."

The single plea shattered something inside Logan.

He stood.

"Vanessa."

She smiled nervously.

"Yes?"

"Go home."

"What?"

"Now."

The smile disappeared.

"You can't embarrass me like this in front of everyone."

"I'm not worried about embarrassing you."

His voice had become frighteningly calm.

"I'm worried about my son."

Security quietly escorted Vanessa from the ballroom while hundreds of guests watched in complete silence.

That night, Logan canceled the remainder of the gala.

Nothing mattered anymore except one question.

Why had his son called a stranger "Mommy"?
