CHAPTER 3 — The Visit

CHAPTER 3 — The Visit
It happened on a Tuesday morning.
I was making tea when I heard the knock.
Three slow taps.
Not rushed.
Not hesitant.
Intentional.
I already knew before I opened the door.
Eleanor Graves stood outside.
No wine glass this time.
No perfect posture.
Just a woman who looked slightly smaller than I remembered.
“I need to see her,” she said.
“No,” I replied immediately.
Her eyes narrowed.
“She is carrying your child.”
“And she is recovering from what you did.”
That sentence hung between us.
For the first time, my mother didn’t have a quick response.
She shifted slightly.
“I didn’t mean to hurt her,” she said finally.
I almost laughed.
Almost.
“But you did.”
Silence.
Then she softened her voice.
“Luke… I was trying to prepare her. The world doesn’t—”
“I don’t care,” I interrupted.
That surprised her.
It surprised me too.
Because I wasn’t yelling.
I wasn’t shaking.
I was done.
“I’m choosing my family,” I said. “And you’re not part of it anymore.”
Her face tightened.
As if she expected anger.
Not finality.
“You’ll regret shutting me out,” she said.
I shook my head.
“No. I already regret not doing it sooner.”
A long silence followed.
Then she stepped back.
Not defeated.
Not apologizing.
Just… realizing control no longer worked.
And for the first time in my life, she had nothing left to say.
She turned and walked away.
No dramatic exit.
No last words.
Just distance.
That night, Natalie stood by the window.
Watching the street.
“She came,” she said softly.
“Yes.”
“Is it over?”
I looked at her.
At the woman who had been made to believe she was fragile.
At the hands that had finally stopped trembling.
At the life we were still building.
“It’s over,” I said.
Natalie nodded slowly.
Then placed her hand on her stomach.
The baby kicked.
She smiled for the first time in weeks.
And in that quiet apartment, I realized something simple but permanent:
May you like
Some families are not born from blood…
They are built from what you choose to protect.
