The cold night air hit her face the moment the grand doors closed behind her.
For the first time in years, there was no one telling her where to stand, how to smile, or when to speak.
Behind her, applause erupted inside the ballroom as Daniel accepted another medal. The celebration continued exactly as planned, as though she had never existed.
She pulled off her black gloves one finger at a time and dropped them into a nearby trash bin.
They had never been about elegance.
They had been armor.
Her phone vibrated.
Mother: Come back inside. You're embarrassing this family.
She stared at the message for a long moment before pressing Block Contact.
Another message appeared immediately from an unknown number.
Daniel: Did I do something wrong?
She smiled sadly.
For years she had believed the problem was him.
Now she realized he had simply been another person playing the role written for him.
Without replying, she turned off her phone and disappeared into the city lights.
