Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Century

Eight months later, the courthouse steps were swarming with reporters.
The trial of Evelyn Hart had become a national media sensation.
The wealthy socialite accused of murdering her own daughter and poisoning her granddaughter.
It was a headline writer’s absolute dream.
I held Lily’s hand tightly as we walked past the flashing cameras.
We were flanked by four large security guards.
The reporters shouted questions from behind the metal barricades.
“Daniel, how does it feel to see her in court?”
“Lily, are you scared of your grandmother?”
I kept my head down and ignored them.
I just wanted this nightmare to be officially over.
Inside the courtroom, the air was thick with tension.
The wooden benches were packed with spectators and journalists.
Evelyn sat at the defense table.
She wore a plain gray suit.
She looked incredibly thin and frail.
The prison system had stripped away every ounce of her former glamour.
She did not look back at us when we entered the room.
The trial lasted for three grueling weeks.
The prosecution methodically dismantled Evelyn’s entire life.
They played the audio recording from Lily’s smartwatch.
The entire courtroom listened in stunned silence as Evelyn’s cold voice ordered the dessert switch.
Then, Marcus Vance took the witness stand.
The mechanic wore a prison uniform.
He detailed exactly how Evelyn had paid him twenty thousand dollars in cash.
He explained how he had severed the brake lines just enough so they would fail under heavy pressure.
He explained how Evelyn had smiled when she handed him the envelope of money.
But the most damning moment came on the final day.
The prosecution played the video of Evelyn’s confession in the interrogation room.
The jury watched her admit to stealing the charity funds.
They watched her admit that Anna was going to expose her.
They watched the motive for murder become undeniably clear.
Evelyn’s highly-paid defense attorneys tried their best.
They argued that the mechanic was lying to save himself.
They argued that Evelyn was confused and grieving during her confession.
But nobody believed them.
The evidence was overwhelming.
The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
When the foreperson stood up to read the verdict, you could hear a pin drop.
“On the charge of first-degree murder of Anna Hart, we find the defendant, guilty.”
A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom.
“On the charge of attempted murder of Lily Hart, we find the defendant, guilty.”
Evelyn finally collapsed in her chair.
She buried her face in her hands and began to weep loudly.
The judge slammed his gavel.
“Order in the court!”
He glared down at Evelyn with absolute disgust.
“Evelyn Hart, you have committed crimes of unfathomable cruelty.”
“You are sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.”
I squeezed Lily’s hand.
She looked up at me and offered a small, brave smile.

The monster was finally locked away.
Forever.
