Chapter 10: The Witness Nobody Expected

Chapter 10: The Witness Nobody Expected

The name meant nothing to me at first.

Evelyn Carter.

Diane's private assistant.

I had heard the name before.

But only in passing.

"Evelyn handles my schedule."

"Evelyn arranged the flowers."

"Evelyn knows where everything is."

Diane had always spoken about her like she was an extension of herself.

Not a person.

A tool.

Someone who existed to make Diane's life easier.

But now...

Evelyn was going to testify against me.

I sat silently after Victoria told me.

Rachel watched my face carefully.

"What happened?"

I looked at her.

"Diane found a witness."

Rachel immediately frowned.

"Who?"

"Diane's assistant."

She stared.

"Evelyn?"

I nodded.

Rachel leaned back.

"That's not good."

"You know her?"

"Not personally."

She paused.

"But everyone in that circle knows her."

"What do they say?"

Rachel hesitated.

"That she is loyal."

I looked down.

Loyal.

That word could mean many things.

Sometimes it meant trustworthy.

Sometimes it meant someone would protect you no matter what you did.

"Did she see what happened?"

Victoria answered before I could ask.

"According to Diane's attorney, yes."

I looked at her.

"How?"

"She was in the kitchen area during the party."

My stomach tightened.

The kitchen.

The perfect place.

Close enough to see.

Far enough away to claim she didn't know everything.

"What is she saying?"

Victoria opened her folder.

"She claims Diane was attempting to help Lily after the spill."

I stared.

"Help her?"

"Yes."

"And the slap?"

Victoria looked at me.

"She claims she did not see it clearly."

I felt a cold anger rising.

Not explosive.

Not uncontrollable.

Something colder.

Because I understood.

This wasn't about what happened.

This was about creating doubt.

If Diane couldn't prove she was innocent...

She would make everyone question whether she was guilty.

"What else?"

Victoria continued.

"She claims you have had ongoing conflicts with Diane."

I almost laughed.

"Of course."

"She says you have expressed frustration about Diane being involved in your marriage."

I looked at the table.

"That's true."

Victoria nodded.

"But the way they present it matters."

"They want it to sound like you already disliked Diane and used this incident as an excuse to remove her."

Rachel shook her head.

"That's insane."

I looked at Victoria.

"But possible."

She nodded.

"Yes."

That was the problem.

The truth didn't always win automatically.

The truth needed to be proven.

And Diane knew how to manipulate appearances.

That evening, I received a message from an unknown number.

My body immediately tensed.

I opened it.

Emily, we need to talk.

I almost blocked it.

Then another message appeared.

I was there that night. I know what really happened.

I stared at the screen.

Rachel noticed.

"Who is it?"

"I don't know."

I showed her.

"Don't answer."

I thought about it.

Then I sent one message.

Who are you?

The response came quickly.

Evelyn Carter.

My heart sank.

Rachel whispered:

"Her."

I didn't answer.

Another message appeared.

I don't want to testify against you.

I read it twice.

Then a third message.

But Diane is forcing me.

I looked at Rachel.

"What do I do?"

She shook her head.

"Ask Victoria."

I did.

Victoria called me five minutes later.

"Do not meet her alone."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Good."

"Can I talk to her?"

"Yes."

"But only through documented communication."

I nodded.

I opened the conversation.

Emily: What do you mean Diane is forcing you?

The typing bubble appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally:

Evelyn: She knows things about me.

My eyebrows tightened.

"What things?"

I typed.

The answer came.

Evelyn: Things that could ruin my life.

I looked at Victoria's advice.

Document everything.

So I took screenshots.

Every message.

Every word.

Then I asked:

Emily: What happened that night?

This time, the answer took longer.

Almost ten minutes.

Then:

Evelyn: Diane was angry before the party started.

My heart began beating faster.

Evelyn: She kept saying Lily needed more discipline.

Another message.

Evelyn: She was upset because Lily always ran to you instead of her.

I closed my eyes.

The same thing.

Again.

Emily: Did you see Diane hit Lily?

The typing bubble appeared.

Stopped.

Appeared again.

Then:

Evelyn: Yes.

I froze.

The next message arrived.

Evelyn: I saw everything.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Because this was the first person from Diane's side who had admitted it.

Not secretly.

Not indirectly.

Clearly.

I typed:

Emily: Why didn't you say anything?

The answer took longer.

Much longer.

Finally:

Evelyn: Because I was afraid.

I looked at the screen.

Emily: Afraid of what?

The response appeared.

Evelyn: Of becoming her next target.

The next morning, Victoria reviewed the messages.

She was quiet.

Too quiet.

"What?"

She looked up.

"This changes things."

"How?"

"If Evelyn is willing to testify honestly..."

She paused.

"She could become our strongest witness."

I nodded.

"But she has to be willing."

"Yes."

"And Diane knows that."

I understood immediately.

Diane didn't choose Evelyn randomly.

She chose someone she believed she controlled.

Someone with something to lose.

Someone who would be afraid to stand up.

That was how Diane operated.

Fear.

Pressure.

Control.

But maybe Diane had made one mistake.

Maybe she underestimated how tired people became.

That afternoon, Evelyn called.

Not texted.

Called.

I answered.

"Hello?"

Her voice was shaking.

"Emily."

"Yes."

"I need to tell you something before I lose my courage."

I sat down.

"Okay."

"Your husband knows more than he told you."

My heart sank.

"Jason?"

"Yes."

"What does he know?"

Evelyn took a breath.

"He knew your mother-in-law had been watching your parenting for months."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means Diane was collecting things."

"Things?"

"Little moments."

"Arguments."

"Times you got upset."

"Anything she could use to make you look unstable."

My hands became cold.

"Why?"

"Because she believed you were going to leave."

I closed my eyes.

Again.

The same words.

The same pattern.

"How long?"

Evelyn whispered:

"Since before Lily's second birthday."

I felt like the air disappeared.

Almost a year.

A year of planning.

A year of watching.

A year of preparing a story about me.

I asked the question I already feared.

"What was Jason doing during all of this?"

Silence.

Then:

"He knew."

I looked down.

"He knew?"

"Yes."

"And he didn't tell me?"

"No."

The answer hurt.

Even though I expected it.

Because there was something worse than being betrayed by an enemy.

Being betrayed by someone who promised to protect you.

Before ending the call, Evelyn said one more thing.

"Emily."

"Yes?"

"There's a reason Diane is so desperate right now."

"What reason?"

"Because there is something else she is afraid you will find."

My heart tightened.

"What?"

Evelyn's voice became almost a whisper.

"The truth about what happened with Jason's father."

The line went silent.

I sat there holding the phone.

Because suddenly...

This was no longer just about Lily.

Something from Jason's past was connected to everything.

And Diane Bennett had spent years making sure nobody looked too closely.

May you like

But now I was looking.

And I wasn't stopping.
