CHAPTER 1 — THE CHOICE

CHAPTER 1 — THE CHOICE
The bedroom fell into complete silence.
Only Emma's quiet sobs filled the room.
Ryan stood frozen between his wife and his mother, unable to believe what he had just witnessed.
His mother's face remained perfectly calm.
"What?" she asked with a shrug. "It's only hair."
Ryan slowly turned toward her.
"Only...hair?"
"You heard me."
She folded her arms tighter across her chest.
"She's become arrogant since getting that promotion. Someone needed to remind her what really matters."
Emma looked up, tears pouring down her cheeks.
"I never did anything to you."
"You stole my son," Margaret replied coldly.
Ryan's expression hardened.
"No, Mom."
His voice was calm.
Dangerously calm.
"You broke into our bedroom while my wife was asleep."
"I was teaching her humility."
"You assaulted her."
Margaret laughed.
"Oh, don't be ridiculous."
Ryan reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm calling the police."
The smile disappeared from Margaret's face.
"You wouldn't dare."
"I already am."
Emma stared at her husband in disbelief as he dialed 911.
Margaret rushed forward.
"Ryan! Hang up that phone!"
He stepped back.
"No."
"You would choose HER over your own mother?"
Ryan looked directly into her eyes.
"I choose the person who didn't wake up with half her head shaved."
Minutes later, officers arrived.
After hearing Emma's statement and seeing the electric clippers covered with fresh red hair, they informed Margaret that she could be charged with assault.
As the officers escorted her outside, she screamed one final threat.
"You'll regret this!
She's tearing this family apart!"
Ryan closed the front door behind them.
Then he walked back into the bedroom, knelt beside Emma, and gently wrapped a blanket around her shaking shoulders.
"I'm so sorry," he whispered.
May you like
"I should have protected you."
Emma leaned against him and cried harder than she ever had before.
