Chapter 2 – The Call That Changed Everything

The ballroom remained frozen.

No one spoke.

No one dared to move.

The little girl trembled against her mother's chest, mashed potatoes dripping from her pink dress onto the polished marble floor. Her tiny fingers clutched her mother's gown as if letting go would make the nightmare real.

Margaret crossed her arms with a smug smile.

"Oh, don't be dramatic," she scoffed. "It was an accident. She'll survive."

The mother's expression never changed.

She simply held the phone to her ear.

"Yes," she said quietly. "I'm ready now."

Margaret laughed.

"Who exactly are you calling? Your parents?"

The mother ended the call without answering.

Thirty seconds later, the grand ballroom doors opened.

A team of security officers walked inside, followed by a sharply dressed attorney carrying a leather briefcase.

Every conversation stopped.

The attorney approached the mother first.

"Mrs. Carter," he said respectfully, handing her a folder. "Everything has been prepared exactly as you requested."

Margaret frowned.

"What is the meaning of this?"

The attorney turned toward her.

"It means your access to every family trust and company account has been suspended effective immediately."

Silence.

The color drained from Margaret's face.

"What?"

"The businesses you believed belonged to your family," the attorney continued, "were legally transferred years ago."

He looked directly at the mother.

"She is the sole majority owner."

Margaret had nothing to say.
