CHAPTER 6 — Coming Home

CHAPTER 6 — Coming Home

One year later...

Spring returned to Greenwich.

The gardens outside my father's estate bloomed exactly as they had when I was a child.

Only this time...

I wasn't running away.

I was finally home.

Physical therapy had helped me walk without pain.

The scars remained.

But they no longer defined me.

Instead of returning to my old life, I founded the Sterling Foundation, providing legal aid, emergency housing, and financial assistance for survivors of domestic violence.

Thousands of women found safety because someone had once answered a desperate phone call.

One afternoon, my father joined me on the porch overlooking the gardens.

He handed me a cup of tea.

"You know," he said with a small smile, "I never stopped leaving your bedroom exactly as it was."

I felt tears gather in my eyes.

"You thought I'd come back?"

"I never hoped you would fail."

He looked toward the setting sun.

"I only hoped that, if life ever became too heavy, you'd remember where home was."

I slipped my hand into his.

"I remember now."

He squeezed it gently.

"And you'll never have to face the darkness alone again."

For the first time in many years, I believed him.

The city skyline shimmered in the distance, but it no longer represented the life I had lost.

It represented the life I had survived.

Sometimes justice arrives in a courtroom.

Sometimes it begins with a single phone call.

And sometimes the greatest victory isn't watching an empire fall—

May you like

It's discovering that the people who truly love you never stopped waiting for you to come home.

THE END
