Chapter 9 - THE CONTRACT WITH DEATH

Julian sent one document after disconnecting.

It was a consent form.

He wanted me to authorize implantation of an experimental valve in Noah.

The form warned of death, stroke, infection, and permanent neurological injury.

It also claimed Noah would likely die without treatment.

Beacon Crest’s pediatric cardiologist disagreed.

Noah had a defect.

But it could be monitored.

He might need surgery later.

He did not need an experimental device that night.

Julian gave me two hours to sign.

If I refused, he threatened to proceed under emergency necessity.

Helen looked at the form.

“He wants legal protection.”

My grandfather shook his head.

“He wants legitimacy.”

I called Grant again.

“What does Julian need besides my signature?”

“Control of the patent.”

“You said the patent belonged to my trust.”

“It does.”

“Then why involve Noah?”

“Because a successful procedure would increase the patent value.”

My stomach turned.

“My son is a demonstration.”

Grant looked away.

“Pierce has investors waiting.”

“Who?”

“Vanessa introduced them.”

Vanessa had never been only Grant’s lover.

She worked for Helix Meridian, a private equity group buying distressed medical companies.

They wanted the valve patent.

If Noah survived, the company would be worth billions.

If he died, Grant could blame Beacon Crest and force a settlement.

Either outcome created leverage.

“Did Vanessa become pregnant to secure Grant?” Helen asked.

Grant’s face changed.

I noticed.

“Is the baby yours?” I asked.

He said nothing.

“Grant.”

“She told me it was.”

Vanessa’s medical records were obtained by warrant.

She was not pregnant.

The ultrasound image she showed Grant belonged to another patient.

The padded clothing.

The doctor visits.

The nursery plans.

All of it had been staged.

She used the pregnancy to accelerate the divorce and push him away from me.

Grant sat in silence when informed.

The woman he abandoned his family for had manufactured the future he wanted.

I felt no satisfaction.

His humiliation could not return Noah.

A second message arrived from Julian.

Forty-five minutes remaining.

An encrypted location code was hidden inside the file.

Theodore recognized the coordinates.

“They are not taking Noah out of the country.”

“Where are they?”

He looked toward the hospital window.

“Vale Tower.”

The corporate headquarters stood across the river.

The top floors contained offices.

The lowest level held an old surgical research suite.

My grandfather closed it after Julian’s scandal.

Nobody outside the family knew it existed.

Julian had returned to the center of the Vale empire.

Federal agents surrounded the tower.

I looked at Helen.

“Prepare the consent form.”

My grandfather turned.

“You cannot sign it.”

“I am not giving permission.”

“I am buying time.”

I signed the document.

Then I changed one sentence.

Consent becomes effective only when the child’s mother is physically present.

Julian accepted.

He sent the elevator code.

I removed the hospital blanket from my shoulders.

“I am going to get my son.”
