CHAPTER 15 - THE SHOT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 15 - THE SHOT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The bullet struck Victor below his shoulder.

He spun and fell against the concrete railing.

The flash drive disappeared into the crusher.

Daniel shouted and fired again.

Federal officers returned fire.

Camille drove her elbow into his ribs.

Evelyn pulled her daughter down as Daniel’s gun discharged toward the ceiling.

Russell reached me and covered my body with his.

The entire confrontation lasted less than ten seconds.

It felt endless.

When the echoes stopped, Daniel lay near the rear exit.

A bullet had entered his leg.

His gun rested several feet away.

Marcus was alive.

Camille was crying in Evelyn’s arms.

Victor lay on the floor, staring at the dark blood spreading across his shirt.

I crawled toward him.

Russell tried to stop me.

“He’s still conscious,” I said.

Victor looked at me as I pressed my hands against the wound.

“You should let me bleed.”

“No.”

“You hate me.”

“Yes.”

His mouth twisted into a weak smile.

“That sounded honest.”

“Stay awake.”

“The drive was empty.”

“I know.”

His eyes widened slightly.

“You knew?”

“The real files were uploaded before we came.”

Victor coughed.

“So I got shot for nothing.”

“You prevented Daniel from finding out.”

“I suppose that counts.”

Paramedics entered.

They pushed me aside and began treating him.

Victor reached for my hand.

I almost pulled away.

Then I allowed him to hold two of my fingers.

“I never deserved you,” he whispered.

“No.”

“I thought I did.”

“That was part of the problem.”

His grip weakened as the paramedics lifted him.

I watched them carry my husband away.

I felt no desire to follow.

That frightened me.

Not because I still loved him.

Because I had finally stopped.

Daniel survived surgery and was placed under armed guard.

Marcus accepted a cooperation agreement.

He turned over passwords, accounts, and thirty years of records.

Camille was arrested for theft, fraud, conspiracy, arson, and assault.

Evelyn refused to leave the hospital corridor while her daughter was processed.

Camille refused to look at her.

The distance between them felt more tragic than any prison sentence.

At dawn, Russell drove my father and me back to Hartwell Tower.

The board was waiting.

So were federal regulators.

The decoded construction archive had revealed everything.

Political payments.

Tax fraud.

Bid manipulation.

Bribed inspectors.

Falsified safety reports.

Daniel had buried crimes inside ordinary company data for decades.

Several records also contained my father’s authorization from 1998.

Arthur read them without speaking.

Then he signed a statement accepting responsibility.

“You do not have to resign before the investigation concludes,” I said.

“Yes, I do.”

“The board will panic.”

“They should.”

“The market could collapse.”

“Hartwell Group is private.”

“Our lenders will still react.”

He looked at me.

“You said we were going to tell the truth.”

“We are.”

“Then we begin with me.”

At nine o’clock, Arthur Hartwell entered the largest conference room in the building.

Hundreds of executives joined by video.

He stood behind the podium and confessed to authorizing the first corrupt payment twenty-eight years earlier.

He explained how fear had become secrecy.

How secrecy had given Daniel power.

How every protected lie had required another.

Then he announced his resignation.

Reporters shouted questions from behind the glass doors.

Arthur ignored them.

He looked directly at me.

“Effective immediately, Olivia Hartwell will serve as interim chair.”

The room erupted.

I had known he intended to step down.

I had not known he intended to place the company in my hands.

I approached the podium.

Before I could speak, every screen in the conference room went black.

A video appeared.

It showed me telling my father seven years earlier that I wanted to test everyone by pretending to be powerless.

Someone had recorded our private conversation.

A caption appeared beneath my face.

Then Victor’s mother walked into the room holding copies of the recording.
