Chapter 5 - The Signature That Wasn't Hers.

The forged document was dated six days before Anastasia’s wedding.

It claimed she had received a future ownership interest in the Reed parcels from her father and had assigned that interest to a Harrington-affiliated holding company for one dollar and “other valuable consideration.”

Every part of the sentence was false.

Thomas had never transferred the property to her.

Anastasia had never signed anything.

And until that morning, neither of them had ever heard of the holding company named in the document.

Evelyn read the copy twice at the Mesa Police Department while Detective Rivera sat across from them.

The signature looked almost perfect.

That was the frightening part.

Anastasia recognized her own looping A, the shortened tail on the final a, even the slight upward slant she had developed from signing hundreds of store receipts.

“It looks like mine,” she admitted.

Thomas slammed one palm onto the table.

“It is not hers.”

Rivera stayed calm.

“We are treating it as potentially fraudulent.”

“Potentially?”

“Mr. Reed, I need evidence before I use a stronger word.”

Thomas leaned back, furious.

Evelyn pointed to the notary seal.

“Have you contacted the notary?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“She says Anastasia appeared in person with identification.”

Anastasia stared at him.

“That never happened.”

“The notary kept a logbook.”

“Does it have my signature?”

“Yes.”

“Fake.”

“And a copy of your driver’s license.”

The room went quiet.

Anastasia remembered Margaret’s words.

A copy of her license had been found in Brooklyn’s drawer.

“When would they have gotten my ID?”

Thomas looked at her.

“The wedding paperwork?”

“No.”

Anastasia shook her head.

Then she remembered the week before the wedding.

Melissa had insisted that every member of the wedding party submit identification to the private aviation company arranging transportation to the honeymoon resort.

Anastasia had texted a photograph of her license to Brooklyn.

She closed her eyes.

“I sent it to her.”

Evelyn understood immediately.

“When?”

“Eight days before the wedding.”

Rivera made a note.

“The alleged notarization happened two days later.”

Thomas whispered a curse.

Evelyn turned the document over.

“Who owns the holding company?”

Rivera slid another page across the table.

“Red Mesa Access LLC.”

“Registered six months ago.”

“Manager listed as C.H. Development Services.”

“C.H.?” Anastasia asked.

Evelyn answered before Rivera could.

“Callan Harrington.”

The room seemed to shrink.

Anastasia stared at the letters until they blurred.

The man who had proposed to her beneath string lights in her parents’ backyard had created a company that now held a forged claim against her family’s land.

Whatever uncertainty remained about whether business and marriage had overlapped was disappearing fast.

“Did Callan sign anything?”

Rivera nodded.

“He signed the acceptance on behalf of the receiving company.”

Thomas stood.

“I want him arrested.”

Evelyn reached for his sleeve.

“Sit down.”

“He forged my daughter’s name to steal my property.”

“We do not yet know who physically created the false document.”

“He benefited from it.”

“Yes.”

“And that matters.”

Thomas sat again only because Anastasia asked him to.

Rivera continued.

“We are transferring the suspected fraud component to the appropriate investigative unit.”

“Separately, the county attorney is reviewing the domestic incident.”

Anastasia’s stomach tightened.

There it was again.

Two realities moving beside each other.

The Harringtons might have lied, manipulated, and planned something around her family’s property.

But she had still reacted to Callan’s slap with an act that injured him.

Evelyn had warned her from the beginning that one truth would not erase the other.

“Any word on the deleted video?” she asked.

Rivera nodded once.

“The provider recovered fragments.”

Anastasia sat forward.

“How much?”

“Three clips are complete enough to review.”

Evelyn’s voice sharpened.

“Do they include the confrontation?”

“One does.”

Anastasia forgot to breathe.

Rivera turned a laptop toward them.

The video opened on the Harrington kitchen.

There was no audio for the first few seconds.

Anastasia appeared from the left carrying the soup tureen.

Brooklyn stood near the doorway.

The angle made the entire movement unmistakable.

Brooklyn looked directly toward Anastasia.

Then she stepped sideways into Anastasia’s path.

Her shoulder struck Anastasia’s arm.

The tureen tilted.

Soup spilled across the carpet and splashed Brooklyn’s dress.

Brooklyn instantly threw both hands up in theatrical shock.

Anastasia watched herself say something.

The audio returned.

“You pushed me.”

Brooklyn’s reply was clear.

“Why would I do that?”

Callan entered frame.

The argument unfolded exactly as Anastasia remembered.

Melissa’s insult.

Callan’s demand.

Anastasia’s refusal.

Then the slap.

There was no ambiguity.

His hand struck her cheek hard enough to turn her head.

Thomas stood again.

Evelyn did not stop him this time.

Callan’s voice came through the laptop speakers.

“I said apologize.”

Anastasia on the screen looked at him.

Then she turned toward the kitchen counter.

The camera angle showed her reach for the pan.

Evelyn paused the video.

Anastasia stared at the frozen frame.

“Keep going.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“You do not have to watch this now.”

“Yes, I do.”

Rivera resumed playback.

The movement happened quickly.

Anastasia lifted the pan and threw its contents toward Callan.

He recoiled.

The family screamed.

The clip ended.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Thomas looked devastated.

Dana, who had joined them for the viewing, covered her mouth.

Anastasia felt tears rising but forced herself to keep looking at the blank screen.

“That is what happened,” she said.

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.”

“I wish I could take back the last part.”

“I know.”

“But I cannot.”

“No.”

Rivera closed the laptop.

“The video strongly contradicts the Harrington family’s statements about the soup and the slap.”

“Will Callan be charged?” Thomas demanded.

“The assault allegation is under review.”

“What about Brooklyn?”

“Also under review.”

Anastasia looked at Rivera.

“And me?”

He did not soften the answer.

“Also under review.”

She appreciated him for that.

Not because it was comforting.

Because it was honest.

The second recovered clip was from earlier that morning.

Melissa and Brooklyn stood near the kitchen island.

This time the audio was perfect.

Brooklyn held Anastasia’s bracelet.

Melissa spoke quietly.

“Put it in the sideboard until after lunch.”

Brooklyn laughed.

“She is going to lose her mind.”

“She does not need to lose her mind.”

Melissa’s voice was cool.

“She only needs to look dishonest.”

Anastasia felt Dana grip her hand.

Brooklyn asked,

“And if Callan backs out?”

Melissa answered without hesitation.

“He won’t.”

“He wants the access parcel more than he wants a peaceful marriage.”

The clip ended.

Thomas stared at the dark screen.

For the first time, his anger vanished.

In its place was hurt.

“He sat at my table,” Thomas whispered.

“He ate my food.”

Anastasia looked down.

“So did I.”

“No.”

Thomas turned toward her.

“You were not part of what they were doing.”

“I married him.”

“You trusted him.”

“That is not the same thing.”

The third recovered clip began at 12:59 p.m.

Callan and Melissa stood alone in the kitchen.

Callan looked agitated.

“This is too much.”

Melissa folded her arms.

“You said you would handle it.”

“I said I would talk to Thomas after the honeymoon.”

“And he will say no again.”

“Then I will find another way.”

Melissa stepped closer.

“There is no other way that keeps the board from seeing you as weak.”

Callan looked toward the camera.

“What about the recording?”

Melissa replied,

“Brooklyn will delete anything we do not need.”

Anastasia’s skin went cold.

Callan said something almost too quiet to hear.

“What exactly are we supposed to need?”

Melissa smiled.

“Leverage.”

The clip ended there.

Evelyn leaned back slowly.

“That changes things.”

Rivera nodded.

“It does.”

Anastasia stared at the screen.

Callan had not sounded enthusiastic.

He had not sounded innocent either.

He had known there was a plan.

He had known the camera would be edited.

And he had still participated in the confrontation.

Her phone buzzed in Evelyn’s folder, where they had placed it during the meeting.

Evelyn checked the screen.

“It is a message from an unknown number.”

She showed Anastasia.

There was no text.

Only a photograph.

It showed Callan lying in a hospital bed.

Beside him stood Brooklyn.

On the bedside table was a yellow legal pad.

Someone had zoomed in enough to make the handwriting readable.

Three lines were visible.

SAY SHE THREATENED BROOKLYN BEFORE LUNCH.

DENY CAMERA ACCESS.

DO NOT MENTION MESA.

At the bottom of the photograph was a final message.

HE IS STILL FOLLOWING THE SCRIPT.
