PART 3 — The Secret Everyone Protected

Three days later, Detective Monroe arrived with a folder nearly two inches thick.

She didn't start by asking about Diego.

She asked about his mother.

"Tell me about Victoria."

I frowned.

"Why?"

The detective slid several reports across the table.

"Because your husband isn't the first member of this family accused of intimidation."

The documents revealed lawsuits, dismissed complaints, former employees who suddenly withdrew statements, and business partners who mysteriously disappeared after legal disputes.

Most cases had collapsed.

Witnesses had changed their stories.

Evidence had vanished.

Money had solved everything.

Until now.

Then Natalie requested to meet me privately.

She looked exhausted.

"I can't keep protecting them anymore."

She handed me a flash drive.

"I've been saving copies of everything."

"What is it?"

"Emails."

"Bank transfers."

"Recorded conversations."

"There are messages between Diego and Victoria discussing how to pressure you into signing over your condo."

I stared at her.

"It wasn't spontaneous."

She shook her head.

"No."

"The dinner was planned weeks in advance."

"They expected you'd give in after enough public humiliation."

My hands trembled.

Then Natalie whispered the sentence that changed everything.

"Victoria also forged paperwork."

I froze.

"What paperwork?"

"She tried to transfer partial ownership of your condo using documents that looked like they came from your mortgage company."

For a moment...

I couldn't breathe.

Had I signed anything?

No.

Never.

Detective Monroe immediately obtained a search warrant.

By sunset, investigators seized computers, financial records, and dozens of documents from the Cherry Hills mansion.

One signature stood out immediately.

Mine.

Except...

It wasn't mine at all.

Someone had practiced copying it.

Poorly.

The case had just transformed from assault...

into conspiracy, fraud, and forgery.
