Chapter 5 - Another Victim Steps Forward

The room remained silent after the old security footage ended.

No one spoke.

No one even seemed to breathe.

The detective slowly closed the laptop and looked around the room.

"This investigation just changed."

Every officer understood what he meant.

This was no longer a single case of domestic violence.

It was beginning to look like a pattern.

The paramedic touched my shoulder.

"Claire."

"We really need to get you to the emergency room."

I nodded.

"My statement is finished."

"I'll go."

As I stood, my legs wobbled.

The dizziness hit me again.

An EMT steadied my arm before I could lose my balance.

"Easy."

"You've lost more blood than you realize."

They guided me toward the front door.

The flashing ambulance lights reflected off the marble floors.

Outside, the cool Napa Valley air hit my face.

It was the first full breath I had taken all night.

As I climbed into the ambulance, someone called my name.

"Claire!"

I turned.

Maya was running toward me.

One officer moved to stop her.

"It's okay," I said.

"Let her come."

Maya reached the ambulance, breathing hard.

Her eyes were red from crying.

"I'm sorry."

She struggled to hold back tears.

"So... so sorry."

I looked at her quietly.

"You tried to help me."

"I should've helped you sooner."

She lowered her head.

"I wanted to."

"So many times."

"But I was terrified."

"Terrified of Adrian?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Terrified of the entire family."

The words hung between us.

She glanced back toward the mansion.

"You don't know what they're capable of."

Before I could respond, she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small silver flash drive.

"I've been hiding this for almost two years."

She pressed it into my hand.

My heart skipped a beat.

"What's on it?"

"Insurance."

"For the day I finally found the courage to leave."

I stared at the tiny device.

"What kind of insurance?"

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Financial records."

"Private emails."

"Scanned documents."

"And videos."

My pulse quickened.

"Videos of what?"

She looked directly into my eyes.

"Things the Caldwells never wanted anyone to see."

An officer stepped closer.

"Maya."

"If that contains evidence, we need to secure it."

She nodded.

"I know."

"But Claire deserves to know why they're so dangerous."

The detective walked outside just in time to hear her last sentence.

He extended an evidence bag.

"You can tell us everything."

"We'll make sure it's protected."

Maya looked at me one last time.

"I trust you."

Then she placed the flash drive inside the evidence bag.

The detective sealed it immediately.

"I appreciate your cooperation."

She nodded weakly.

"I've been waiting a long time for this."

Suddenly, the front door of the mansion burst open.

Eleanor stormed outside.

"You ungrateful little liar!"

She pointed directly at Maya.

"You've destroyed this family!"

Maya didn't flinch.

"No."

"You destroyed it."

"You just expected everyone else to keep pretending."

Eleanor's face twisted with rage.

"You'll regret this."

The detective stepped between them.

"Mrs. Caldwell."

"That's enough."

She ignored him.

"You think anyone will believe you?"

"You've lived off this family for years!"

Maya's expression remained calm.

"I kept every receipt."

"I kept every email."

"And I kept copies."

Eleanor froze.

For the first time, genuine panic crossed her face.

"You..."

"You copied them?"

Maya nodded.

"I learned from watching Charles."

"You always keep a backup."

The detective looked at the sealed evidence bag.

"I'd say that was a very smart decision."

Charles walked outside moments later.

He looked older than he had an hour before.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His confident posture was gone.

He stared at Maya with disappointment rather than anger.

"You could have come to me."

She laughed bitterly.

"I did."

"Three different times."

"You told me loyalty mattered more than the truth."

Charles didn't deny it.

Instead, he quietly said,

"I was protecting this family."

Maya shook her head.

"No."

"You were protecting your reputation."

The words struck him harder than any insult.

He looked away.

The ambulance doors remained open.

The EMT checked my blood pressure again.

"It keeps dropping."

"We're leaving now."

As the doors began to close, the detective stepped forward.

"Mrs. Bennett."

"One more question."

I nodded.

"Did your husband ever ask you to transfer ownership of your condo before tonight?"

I thought back over the past year.

The subtle conversations.

The strange requests.

The paperwork he insisted I sign without reading.

Then one memory came rushing back.

Three months earlier.

Adrian had placed a stack of legal documents on our kitchen table.

He told me they were insurance forms.

I almost signed them.

Almost.

Until I noticed one page mentioned a property transfer.

When I questioned him, he laughed and claimed his attorney had included the wrong document by mistake.

At the time...

I believed him.

Now I knew better.

I looked at the detective.

"He already tried once."

The detective's expression hardened.

"Do you still have those documents?"

I felt another chill run through my body.

"Yes."

"They're locked in a file cabinet at my condo."

The detective slowly nodded.

"I think those papers just became very important."

As the ambulance doors finally closed, I looked through the back window toward the Caldwell estate.

Police officers were still everywhere.

Crime scene tape now stretched across the grand front entrance.

The family that had spent decades convincing everyone they were untouchable was watching their empire become an active crime scene.

But deep inside...

I couldn't shake one unsettling thought.

If Adrian had planned to steal my condo months ago...

Who had written those documents?

Because whoever prepared them hadn't just expected my signature.

May you like

They had expected me never to read the fine print.

And that meant someone else had been helping the Caldwells all along.
