PART 6 — Home

One year later, sunlight poured through the windows of my downtown Capitol Hill condo.

The same condo they had tried to take.

Only now it looked different.

The walls displayed architectural awards.

Fresh flowers sat on the kitchen island.

Peace filled every room.

My architecture firm had expanded into three states.

I hired young designers who reminded me of myself years earlier.

One afternoon I received a handwritten letter.

It was from Natalie.

She had divorced Diego's brother after recognizing the same patterns of control within the family.

She thanked me.

"You showed me that silence protects abusers, not families."

I folded the letter and placed it inside a drawer beside my mother's photograph.

Sometimes people ask whether I regret calling 911 that night.

My answer is always the same.

"No."

The dinner plate left four stitches.

The courage to make that phone call gave me back the rest of my life.

Because real family never demands your home.

Real love never requires your fear.

And the strongest foundation I ever built...

Wasn't made of concrete or steel.

May you like

It was built the moment I chose to stand up, tell the truth, and never surrender what was rightfully mine.

THE END
