Chapter 2 – The Empire Behind the Curtain

Chapter 2 – The Empire Behind the Curtain
Corporate headquarters stood above the sleeping city like a fortress of glass and steel.
By the time Mariana Escalante stepped through the private entrance, every executive on the executive floor was already waiting.
No one questioned why they had been called after midnight.
No one dared.
Her father, Alejandro Escalante, rose from the head of the conference table.
His silver hair reflected the city lights, but his eyes remained as sharp as ever.
"I hoped this day would never come," he said quietly.
Mariana removed her wedding ring.
She placed it on the polished table.
"I did too."
The room fell silent.
For four years she had insisted on building Andrew's company without revealing her identity.
She wanted to know whether a man could love her without money.
Instead...
She discovered exactly how much he worshipped it.
The chief legal officer opened several thick folders.
"Every investment made into Sterling Holdings was routed through Escalante Capital under anonymous trusts."
"Andrew has never known."
"The voting shares..."
"The emergency credit facilities..."
"The real estate holdings..."
"They're all under your authority."
Mariana nodded once.
"Proceed."
Within minutes, dozens of encrypted emails left the building.
Every bank received instructions.
Every lender received notice.
Every line of credit was frozen.
Every confidential guarantee Mariana had personally signed disappeared.
The invisible safety net beneath Andrew's empire vanished in less than thirty minutes.
Across town...
Andrew was still celebrating.
Brenda poured champagne into crystal glasses while Margaret admired herself in a mirror.
"I told you she'd come crawling back," Margaret scoffed.
Andrew leaned back on the sofa.
"She has nowhere else to go."
At that exact moment...
His phone rang.
Then another.
And another.
The smile faded from his face.
His chief financial officer sounded panicked.
"Sir..."
"Our primary accounts have been frozen."
"What?"
"Our investors are demanding explanations."
"The banks have suspended our credit."
Andrew laughed nervously.
"That has to be a mistake."
"It isn't."
Another call interrupted.
Then another.
The board chairman.
The legal department.
The auditors.
Each conversation sounded worse than the last.
By dawn...
Andrew hadn't slept.
Neither had anyone inside the mansion.
At seven-thirty that morning, an emergency board meeting was called.
Andrew stormed into the conference room expecting answers.
Instead...
He found Mariana already seated at the opposite end of the table.
She wore a charcoal-gray business suit.
No jewelry.
No wedding ring.
Only quiet confidence.
Every board member stood as she entered.
Every single one.
Andrew frowned.
"What is this?"
The chairman cleared his throat.
"Mr. Sterling..."
"I believe it's time you were introduced to the majority shareholder."
Andrew looked around the room in confusion.
Then everyone turned toward Mariana.
His smile disappeared.
"No..."
The chairman slid a folder across the table.
"Mrs. Mariana Escalante owns fifty-eight percent of Sterling Holdings through Escalante Capital."
"She has since before your marriage."
Andrew stared at the documents.
His hands began to shake.
"This is impossible."
Mariana calmly folded her hands.
"No."
"You simply never asked where your miracles came from."
For the first time in his life...
May you like
Andrew realized the empire he claimed to have built...
Had never truly belonged to him.
