Chapter 5 - The Eviction

Grant stared at me as if I were speaking a foreign language.

"I am the CEO," he stated slowly.

"You were the CEO," I corrected him.

I opened the manila folder Harrison had left on the table.

"The board held an emergency vote at 7:00 AM."

I slid a stack of legal documents across the polished mahogany table.

"You were unanimously removed for gross misconduct and breach of morality clauses."

Grant's face flushed a deep, dangerous red.

"You manipulated them!"

"No, Grant, I just showed them the video of you assaulting a child."

He looked down at the papers in disbelief.

"You can't fire me from my own family's company."

"Read the fine print, Grant."

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table.

"It hasn't been your family's company since my father bailed you out."

He frantically flipped through the documents.

His eyes widened as he read the corporate restructuring clauses.

"I own sixty-eight percent of the voting shares," I explained patiently.

"I am the board."

He dropped the papers as if they had burned his hands.

"You plotted this," he whispered.

"I protected my daughter."

I pulled a second manila folder from my briefcase.

"These are the divorce papers."

I tossed them onto the table.

"I am filing for sole physical and legal custody of Sophie."

Grant suddenly lunged across the table toward me.

Before he could reach me, two massive security guards grabbed him.

"Assaulting me in front of witnesses won't help your criminal case, Grant."

He thrashed against the guards' iron grips.

"I will take you for everything you have in court!" he spat.

"With what lawyers?" I asked innocently.

"Your accounts are frozen, and your mother is currently trying to sell her fake Hermes bags."

I stood up and buttoned my coat.

"You have absolutely nothing left."

"Clara, wait!" he suddenly pleaded, his tone shifting from rage to desperation.

"We can go to counseling!"

"The time for counseling was before you shoved our child into a glass box."

I walked toward the glass doors of the boardroom.

"Escort Mr. Bennett out of the building," I ordered the guards.

"If he steps foot on this property again, have him arrested for trespassing."

I didn't look back as the elevator doors closed on his screaming face.

The velvet rope had finally snapped, and I was holding the scissors.
