Chapter 3: After the Fall

Chapter 3: After the Fall
By morning, the news cycle had already begun rewriting him.
Former CEO.
Leadership shakeup.
Sudden corporate restructuring.
No one mentioned my name yet—but they would.
They always did.
Eventually.
I stood in my office on the 60th floor, watching the city wake beneath me.
Mr. Caldwell entered quietly.
“It’s complete,” he said. “All executive access revoked. Security clearance updated. Company assets secured.”
I nodded once. “And Daniel?”
A pause.
“He’s still in the building. Refusing to leave the executive suite.”
Of course he was.
Denial was always the last place people clung to.
“I’ll handle it,” I said.
The executive floor felt emptier than it ever had.
Not physically.
Energetically.
Daniel stood behind the glass wall of what used to be his office, staring at nothing. His tie was loose. His confidence was gone.
When he saw me, he rushed to the door.
“Elena,” he said quickly, almost breathless. “You proved your point. Now stop this. We can fix it. We can go back—”
“There is no back,” I said.
He laughed once, sharp and broken.
“This is because of her, isn’t it? Chloe? I’ll end it. Right now. Just—undo this.”
I studied him for a moment.
And for the first time, I saw it clearly.
He didn’t miss me.
He missed access.
He missed control.
He missed comfort wrapped in my silence.
“You still don’t understand,” I said quietly.
His voice cracked. “Then explain it to me.”
I stepped closer.
Not angry.
Not emotional.
Final.
“I didn’t take your company,” I said.
“I took back what you were temporarily allowed to run.”
That landed.
I saw it.
The exact moment his mind stopped trying to negotiate with reality.

Behind him, the city reflected in the glass—cold, indifferent, moving on.
Just like I was.
