CHAPTER 2 — THE SILENCE BEFORE THE STORM

CHAPTER 2 — THE SILENCE BEFORE THE STORM
The next morning arrived like nothing had changed.
Sunlight slipped through the curtains of the Sterling Manor, soft and golden, touching marble floors that had already hidden too many secrets.
Daniel sat at the dining table, scrolling his phone, calm again. The rage from the night before had already been replaced with entitlement.
Evelyn sipped her tea like a queen reviewing a quiet kingdom.
And I cooked.
Eggs. Toast. Coffee—his favorite brand this time.
No mistakes.
No resistance.
Daniel glanced at the plate and smirked slightly. “See? You can learn.”
I didn’t answer.
That silence pleased him more than words ever could.
But what they didn’t know… silence is not surrender.
It’s preparation.
My phone was in my pocket the entire time, recording every sound in the house. Every word. Every clink of a cup. Every casual cruelty disguised as normal family life.
After breakfast, Daniel kissed my forehead—performative, ownership disguised as affection.
“I knew you’d come around,” he whispered.
When he left, Evelyn leaned closer, her voice soft like poison wrapped in silk.
“Don’t mistake mercy for weakness,” she said.
I finally looked at her.
May you like
For the first time, I let her see something she had never seen before.
Clarity.
