Chapter 5 — The Last Name I Chose

Chapter 5 — The Last Name I Chose
One year later.
Blackthorn Manor no longer belonged to Nathan.
I donated the estate to become a rehabilitation center for survivors of domestic violence.
The ballroom where I had been beaten became a legal aid clinic.
The room where Celeste drank champagne became a counseling center.
Sometimes justice isn't revenge.
Sometimes...
Justice is making sure no one else suffers where you once did.
Nathan was sentenced to twenty-seven years in federal prison for financial crimes, conspiracy, money laundering, and aggravated assault.
Celeste received twenty-two years after every appeal failed.
Neither would control another life again.
As for me...
I reclaimed the name Hawthorne.
Not because it represented wealth.
But because it reminded me where true strength had always come from.
On the anniversary of that terrible night, Dad and I stood together outside the center.
He looked at the families walking safely through the front doors.
"You finally came home," he said quietly.
I smiled.
"No."
"I finally found myself."
The wind carried away the last memories of the woman who had once believed silence could save a marriage.
It never could.
But truth...
Truth saved a life.
And sometimes...
May you like
That was enough to change the world.
The End.
