Chapter 9 - The Date He Chose.

The red ledger felt heavier in my hands after Richard's last sentence.
Ask him who chose the date.
I looked at Evan.
He stood beside the memorial plaque to his mother with his face drained of color.
Claire remained near the chapel door.
Richard watched us through the phone she had placed on the pew.
For once, Luca did not step between me and the person I needed answers from.
He simply moved closer to my father.
"Evan."
My voice sounded calmer than I felt.
"What date?"
Evan stared at the floor.
Richard smiled on the screen.
"Tell your wife."
"Stop calling her that," Evan said.
The words came out sharp.
Richard's smile disappeared.
"Interesting time to discover a spine."
I kept my eyes on Evan.
"Tell me."
He swallowed.
"The induction."
My body went cold.
Nora had been born after an induction my doctor recommended because my blood pressure had started climbing near the end of pregnancy.
Evan had been the one who pushed hardest for the exact day.
He had said Thursday worked better because he could clear his schedule.
I remembered laughing at him for trying to calendar a baby.
"You chose the induction date."
"I asked the doctor whether Thursday was safe."
"Why Thursday?"
He looked at me.
"Because my father told me the trust's quarterly verification window closed Friday at midnight."
I stared at him.
"You timed our daughter's birth for a financial filing window."
"No."
His voice cracked.
"I agreed to a date that was already medically acceptable because I thought it would force everything into the open."
"That is not better."
"I know."
"Did you know Richard planned to challenge my capacity?"
Evan looked toward the phone.
Richard answered for him.
"Of course he did."
Evan's head snapped up.
"No."
"You signed the contingency packet."
"You told me it was for an emergency."
"It was."
Richard's voice stayed smooth.
"The emergency was losing control of eighty-two million dollars."
My father made a quiet sound of disgust.
Richard looked at him through the camera.
"Thomas."
My father's face hardened.
"You always did confuse possession with control."
"And you always confused principle with strategy."
"I survived you."
"Barely."
Luca stepped toward the phone.
"Careful."
Richard's gaze shifted to him.
"Luca Moretti."
"Richard Carver."
"You look just like your father when he thought he could threaten me."
"I'm not threatening you."
Luca's voice was flat.
"I'm documenting you."
Sofia, still connected by video call from her office, spoke through another phone.
"And so am I."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
Claire looked down at the device on the pew.
For the first time, she seemed uneasy.
Richard leaned closer to his camera.
"Leah, put the ledger down and walk away."
"Why?"
"Because none of this needs to become public."
"You threatened my father."
"I protected him."
Thomas laughed once.
"You kept me useful."
Richard ignored him.
"You have a newborn."
"You should be thinking about stability."
The word made me furious.
"You tried to use my recovery from childbirth as evidence I couldn't make decisions."
"My attorneys overreached."
"Your attorneys used exactly the plan Evan signed."
Richard's expression did not change.
"Then blame Evan."
I looked at my husband.
The cruelty of the move was almost elegant.
Richard had used his son for years and was ready to throw him away the moment he became inconvenient.
Evan saw it too.
Something in his face changed.
Not redemption.
Not courage.
Recognition.
"You were always going to blame me."
Richard said nothing.
"The prenatal test."
Evan took a step toward the phone.
"The custody forms."
Another step.
"Claire's access to Nora's sample."
He looked at his father.
"My name is on all of it."
Richard's mouth tightened.
"Because you were the husband."
"Because you needed somebody disposable."
Claire's eyes closed briefly.
I looked at her.
That reaction told me she already knew.
"Claire."
She opened her eyes.
"How long have you known?"
She looked at Richard's image.
Then she picked up the phone.
"Long enough."
She ended the call.
The screen went black.
Evan stared at her.
"What are you doing?"
"What I should have done months ago."
She removed a second phone from her bag.
This one was smaller and older.
She placed it beside the ledger.
"Richard thinks I came here to retrieve that."
She nodded toward the red notebook.
"I came here because I knew he would say too much if he thought he had everyone cornered."
Sofia's voice came through the video call.
"Was that conversation recorded?"
"Yes."
"Send it to me now."
Claire did.
I watched her carefully.
"Why should any of us trust you?"
"You shouldn't."
At least she had the sense not to ask.
"Then why are you helping?"
"Because Richard drafted a memo three weeks ago assigning full responsibility for the M-17 transfers to me."
She looked at Evan.
"And to you."
Evan's face twisted.
"You knew?"
"I found it after Nora's prenatal test."
"And you said nothing."
Claire's laugh was bitter.
"We were sleeping together, Evan."
The sentence hit the chapel like broken glass.
She did not soften it for me.
I was almost grateful.
"You were lying to your wife."
Claire continued.
"I was lying to you."
"Your father was lying to both of us."
"Nobody in this room gets to be surprised that the lies multiplied."
Evan looked sick.
I felt strangely calm.
Their affair had already broken me once.
Now it was only another fact in a room full of worse ones.
"Did you steal Nora's sample?" I asked.
Claire looked at me.
"I redirected it."
"That is a polished way to say yes."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Richard ordered me to send it to North Lab."
"And then you signed it out."
"Because I knew he intended to substitute the chain after testing."
"Where is the sample?"
She hesitated.
Luca moved one step closer.
"Don't make this difficult."
Claire looked at him.
"It's in a secured evidence locker at my law firm."
"You kept it?"
"Sealed."
"Why?"
"Insurance."
That answer was believable in a way heroism would not have been.
Sofia spoke.
"Claire, if the seal is intact, you need independent counsel before you touch anything else."
Claire nodded.
"I already called one."
"Good."
I looked at Evan.
"Did you know she kept the sample?"
"No."
"Did you know she was your father's special counsel when you started seeing her?"
He nodded.
"Yes."
"Did you sleep with her because of the trust?"
His eyes filled.
"No."
"Don't expect that to comfort me."
"I don't."
I turned back to Claire.
"What documents did Evan sign?"
She took a folder from her bag.
"Copies."
She placed them on the pew.
The first was the prenatal test authorization.
The second was the power of attorney I had already revoked.
The third was the temporary-custody contingency.
The fourth was new.
A planning memo dated ten days before Nora's birth.
EVENT: BENEFICIARY DELIVERY.
TARGET DATE: AUGUST 14.
OBJECTIVE: SECURE CHILD CUSTODIAL ACCESS PRIOR TO TRUST VERIFICATION.
RESPONSIBLE PARTY: EVAN CARVER.
My hands went numb.
At the bottom was Evan's electronic acknowledgment.
I looked at him.
"You signed this."
"Yes."
"Ten days before she was born."
"Yes."
"And you still want me to believe you came back to the hospital because you panicked?"
He looked like he wanted to disappear.
"I was supposed to take Nora to a private suite for what my father called identity protection."
"Did you intend to?"
"For about one terrible hour, yes."
The honesty was brutal.
"Then why did you leave the hospital first?"
His eyes moved to Claire.
"Because I told him I couldn't do it."
Claire nodded slowly.
"He did."
I stared at her.
"When?"
"After Nora was born."
"He came into the hallway and told me he was done."
Evan spoke over her.
"Then she told me my father would file the capacity motion with or without me."
"So you walked out with her."
"I thought we could stop him from his office."
"And then you came back demanding my baby."
His face broke.
"Because my father sent me a message saying Moretti was there to take her and that if Luca got access to the trust, you would lose everything."
"You believed him again."
"Yes."
"You still chose force over asking me the truth."
"Yes."
Each yes was a stone placed between us.
There would be no bridge back.
Thomas shifted in the pew.
"Richard's greatest talent was making people believe they had only two choices."
He looked at Evan.
"But you still choose which one you take."
Evan nodded.
"I know."
The chapel fell quiet.
Then my father's gaze moved toward Claire's folder.
"There should be another page."
Claire froze.
"What page?"
"The M-17 access covenant."
Her eyes narrowed.
"I've never seen it."
Thomas looked at Luca.
"Antonio had a copy."
Luca frowned.
"Not in the files I found."
"Because he didn't keep it with the trust."
"Where?"
Thomas looked at me.
"With Diane."
My mother.
I felt the room tilt again.
"My mother had a copy?"
"She had the original."
"Where is it?"
Thomas gave me a sad look.
"She hid it in the one place Richard never thought mattered."
A childhood memory returned.
Yellow fur.
One floppy ear.
A blue ribbon sewn into the lining.
Captain.
I whispered the name.
May you like
My father nodded.
"Find the rabbit."
