Chapter 3 – The Fall of a King

Chapter 3 – The Fall of a King
By sunrise, every bank connected to Adrian's companies had received legal notices.
The emergency board meeting began at eight o'clock.
It ended before nine.
Adrian wasn't allowed to keep his position as CEO.
The directors had reviewed years of unauthorized spending, hidden liabilities, and personal expenses disguised as corporate investments.
One vote after another went against him.
When the chairman announced the decision, Adrian stood up so quickly his chair crashed onto the floor.
"You can't remove me! I built this company!"
"No," one board member answered quietly.
"You managed it."
"Claire built it beside you."
"And the Hawthorne investment kept it alive."
Outside the building, reporters crowded the entrance.
Questions flew from every direction.
"Mr. Cross! Is it true you no longer own your mansion?"
"What happened with the Hawthorne family?"
"Are fraud allegations being investigated?"
Adrian pushed through the cameras without answering.
Hours later, he returned to the mansion.
His electronic gate code no longer worked.
He tried his house key.
The locks had already been changed.
The same security guards who had watched Claire leave barefoot now stood in front of him.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"You no longer have authorization to enter."
Adrian stared in disbelief.
"This is my home."
The head of security shook his head.
"No, sir."
"It never was."
Behind the gates, Claire stood on the front steps.
Not smiling.
Not celebrating.
Simply watching.
Adrian fell to his knees.
"Claire... please."
"I made a terrible mistake."
"I was manipulated."
"I'll end things with Vanessa."
"We can fix this."
Claire slowly walked closer until only the gate separated them.
"You didn't lose me because of another woman."
"You lost me because you forgot who stood beside you before anyone believed in you."
She looked into the eyes of the man she once trusted with her heart.
"When I had nothing, I gave you everything."
"When you thought I had nothing... you took everything."
There was nothing left to say.
She turned away.
The gates closed.
May you like
This time...
They closed on Adrian.
