Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Fall
Emma couldn't stop staring at the red stew spread across the hardwood floor.
It looked almost like blood.
Every breath sent another wave of pain through her ribs as she leaned against the kitchen cabinets, unable to stand.
Her mother-in-law, Linda, knelt beside her with trembling hands.
"Don't move. The ambulance is coming."
When Daniel rushed through the front door, his face drained of color.
"What happened?"
Linda looked up at him.
"She had an accident."
Daniel's eyes immediately found the overturned pot...then the broken phone lying several feet away.
Emma tried to speak.
"It wasn't..."
Her voice faded before she could finish.
The paramedics arrived minutes later.
As they carefully lifted Emma onto the stretcher, one of them quietly asked,
"Did you fall on your own?"
Emma hesitated.
She looked at Daniel.
Then she whispered...
"I don't know."
Those four words changed everything.
Because hospitals are required to report suspicious injuries.
Less than an hour later, detectives arrived.

And the first question they asked was simple.
"Can someone tell us exactly what happened in this kitchen?"
