"I made a mistake."
Ethan's voice cracked.
He slowly walked back toward the altar.
"I'm sorry."
Sophie looked at him without expression.
"I was scared."
No answer.
"I thought choosing security would make me happy."
Still silence.
He stopped only a few feet away.
"I was wrong."
The church waited.
Every guest watched.
Every camera remained fixed on them.
"I love you, Sophie."
For a long moment...
She simply looked into his eyes.
Searching.
Remembering.
Then she gave the smallest shake of her head.
"No."
One word.
Soft.
Calm.
Final.
"You didn't leave because you stopped loving me."
She stepped closer.
"You left because you believed someone else had more to offer."
Her voice never rose.
"And now you're back because you think I do."
Ethan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Sophie gently removed her engagement ring.
She placed it in his trembling hand.
"You didn't lose a fortune today."
She smiled sadly.
"You lost the only person who loved you before anyone knew my last name."
