Chapter 3: Four Years of Silence

Chapter 3: Four Years of Silence
Brandon came to my house three days later.
Alone.
He looked exhausted.
"I owe you an apology."
I invited him inside.
He sat at my kitchen table, the same one where he had done homework as a boy.
"I didn't want to see it," he admitted.
"What?"
"The way Vanessa treated you."
He rubbed his forehead.
"She always had an explanation. You were too sensitive. You misunderstood. She was joking."
He laughed bitterly.
"I believed every excuse."
I opened the refrigerator and pulled out a photo Lily had taped there months earlier.
It showed three stick figures.
One was labeled Grandma.
One was Lily.
The third was a crooked birthday cake with a smiling face.
"She loves coming here," Brandon said quietly.
"Because she feels safe."
His eyes filled with regret.
"I don't know when I stopped protecting the people who mattered."
I reached across the table and squeezed his hand.
"It's not too late."
He nodded slowly.
Then he pulled out his phone.
"I want you to see something."
He showed me dozens of text messages.
Vanessa mocking my cooking.
Complaining every time we visited.
Calling me "the old woman."
Laughing about how easy it was to make me apologize even when I wasn't wrong.
My stomach turned.
Brandon looked sick.
"I found these after she left."
He swallowed hard.
"I don't recognize the person I married."
A month later, Vanessa asked to meet.
She expected an apology.
Instead she found Brandon waiting with divorce papers.
"I can't stay married to someone who enjoys hurting people," he told her.
She laughed.
Then she realized he was serious.
For the first time since I'd met her...
She had no control over the conversation.
She signed nothing.
She simply walked away.
