CHAPTER 14: RICHARD STERLING’S FINAL MOVE

CHAPTER 14: RICHARD STERLING’S FINAL MOVE

Richard Sterling was gone.

His mansion was empty.

His office had been abandoned.

His bank accounts were frozen.

His carefully built reputation was collapsing faster than anyone could have imagined.

But I knew Richard.

A man like him did not run because he was defeated.

He ran because he was preparing.

And that made him more dangerous.

The next morning, the city woke up to another headline.

“Business Leader Richard Sterling Missing Amid Growing Investigation.”

The media finally stopped calling him a respected businessman.

They stopped calling him a community leader.

They finally used the word everyone had avoided.

Investigation.

I sat in my office staring at the article.

Claire walked in carrying a stack of documents.

“He transferred money before disappearing.”

I looked up.

“How much?”

“Millions.”

I sighed.

“Where?”

“That is the problem.”

She placed the documents on my desk.

“The accounts were moved through several shell companies.”

I scanned the pages.

Richard had planned this.

Every step.

Every escape route.

Every backup plan.

“He knew this day would come.”

Claire nodded.

“He prepared for years.”

I closed the file.

“People like Richard don’t believe they will fall.”

“Then why prepare?”

“Because deep down, they know.”

I looked out the window.

“They just believe they are smart enough to survive.”

Later that afternoon, Marcus Whitmore arrived at the courthouse.

This time, he did not walk in like a powerful judge.

He walked in like a man carrying the weight of his own mistakes.

He placed a folder on my desk.

“What is this?”

“The final evidence.”

I looked at him.

“You kept more?”

He nodded.

“I kept everything.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

His answer was simple.

“Because I always knew someone would eventually need it.”

I opened the folder.

Inside were recordings.

Private meetings.

Financial agreements.

Names.

The entire structure behind Richard Sterling’s influence.

I looked at Marcus.

“You could have stopped this years ago.”

“Yes.”

“But you didn’t.”

He lowered his head.

“No.”

For a moment, I felt anger.

Real anger.

Not because he betrayed me.

Because he knew exactly how many people were hurt.

“How many children?”

Marcus looked at me.

“What?”

“How many children had to suffer because adults were afraid?”

He had no answer.

Because there was no answer that could make it acceptable.

Finally, he whispered:

“Too many.”

I closed the folder.

“Then help me fix it.”

Marcus looked surprised.

“You would still work with me?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He lowered his eyes.

“But?”

“I will use the truth.”

The statement was clear.

“I am not protecting you.”

“I understand.”

“I am not protecting Richard.”

“I understand.”

“I am protecting every person who was ignored because powerful people thought they were untouchable.”

Marcus nodded.

And for the first time, he looked relieved.

Not forgiven.

Just relieved.

Because accountability had finally arrived.

That evening, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I already knew.

I answered.

“Richard.”

A quiet laugh came through the line.

“You always were good at recognizing patterns.”

I stood.

“Where are you?”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you need to answer for what you did.”

Richard laughed.

“You still believe that.”

His voice sounded different.

Calmer.

Almost peaceful.

That worried me.

“You hurt my daughter.”

“I know.”

The casual way he said it made my blood run cold.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then I asked:

“You planned it?”

“No.”

A pause.

“But I knew Max was becoming like me.”

My hand tightened.

“You used your own son.”

Richard sighed.

“You make it sound cruel.”

“It is cruel.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“It is reality.”

I walked toward the window.

“You lost, Richard.”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“I changed the game.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“You found my secrets.”

“Yes.”

“You exposed my network.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my reputation.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But you never found the one thing that matters.”

My expression changed.

“What?”

Richard whispered:

“The original evidence.”

I froze.

“What evidence?”

“The evidence that can destroy everyone.”

I looked at the files.

“What are you talking about?”

“The proof that shows how the entire system began.”

I felt a chill.

“Where is it?”

Richard laughed.

“If I told you, it wouldn’t be a secret.”

Then the line went quiet.

I thought he had hung up.

But then he spoke again.

“Bring Lily.”

My entire body froze.

“What did you say?”

“Bring your daughter.”

My voice became cold.

“If you come near my child—”

“I’m not going to hurt her.”

His voice sounded almost offended.

“I need her.”

“Why?”

A long pause.

Then:

“Because she is the reason this all happened.”

The call ended.

I stood completely still.

Claire rushed into the room.

“What happened?”

I looked at her.

“He wants Lily.”

Her face changed.

“No.”

I nodded.

“He knows she is the reason I never gave up.”

Claire immediately reached for her phone.

“We need protection.”

“Yes.”

But inside, I already understood something.

Richard was not trying to escape anymore.

He was trying to force me into his final game.

And this time, the target was not my career.

Not my reputation.

Not my position.

My daughter.

The one person who made me stronger.

The one person Richard should never have touched.

I picked up the final evidence folder.

Then I looked at Claire.

“Find him.”

She nodded.

“We will.”

Because Richard Sterling had made the biggest mistake of his life.

He thought hurting my daughter would make me surrender.

He forgot something.
