CHAPTER 1 — The Moment After Silence

CHAPTER 1 — The Moment After Silence
The silence didn’t break after Colonel Hart spoke.
It settled.
Like something heavy had been placed on every surface in the room and no one knew if they were allowed to move it.
Margaret Prescott held her expression together, but only just. The corners of her mouth stayed lifted out of habit, not confidence.
Ethan shifted his weight, suddenly unsure of where to look.
Emily’s grip on her mother’s hand tightened again—small, instinctive, real.
A nurse finally stepped closer to the doorway, but still didn’t interrupt. Even she understood this wasn’t medical anymore.
Margaret spoke first, carefully.
“You’re making a mistake,” she said. “You’re escalating something that can’t be undone.”
Colonel Hart didn’t look away from her daughter.
“I’m not escalating anything,” she said quietly. “I’m ending it.”
That word changed the temperature of the room.
Ending.
Not negotiating. Not discussing. Ending.
Margaret’s smile disappeared completely now.
And for the first time, she looked at Emily—not as a problem to manage, but as something that could no longer be controlled.
Colonel Hart pressed the call button beside the bed.
A short beep echoed.
May you like
Not a threat.
A record.
