Chapter 7 - The Woman at the Door.

They did not make it to Meridian Tower before Jenna arrived.

Claire was halfway across the foyer when pounding shook the front doors.

One of Elias's security men looked through the side glass and reached for the lock.

A woman stumbled inside with rain running from her hair and coat.

Claire barely recognized her.

Jenna Cross usually looked immaculate.

Her dark hair was always pinned into a clean knot.

Her suits never wrinkled.

Her voice never rose.

Tonight one sleeve was torn, mud covered her shoes, and blood marked the edge of her lower lip.

Grant stepped forward.

"Jenna."

She flinched.

The reaction was small.

Claire saw it anyway.

Elias moved between them.

"Stay there."

Grant stopped.

"She works for me."

Jenna laughed once, breathlessly.

"Not anymore."

She pulled a waterproof document pouch from beneath her coat.

Elias took it.

Inside was Nathan's signed confession.

The original pages were dry.

Claire looked at Jenna.

"Why did you steal the briefcase?"

Jenna wiped rain from her cheek.

"Because I didn't know if Voss had Nathan's original or a copy."

Elias examined the signature.

"You could have called me."

"I didn't trust anyone who knew where the confession was."

"Including me?"

"Especially you."

Elias almost smiled.

"Fair."

Grant's patience snapped.

"What game are you playing?"

Jenna looked at him.

The fear in her face changed into anger.

"The one where I stop cleaning up after you."

Grant took another step.

"Be careful."

Claire heard the threat beneath the quiet tone.

Jenna heard it too.

She looked at Claire.

"That's how he does it."

Claire remained still.

"Does what?"

"Makes everything sound reasonable until you realize he's warning you."

Grant scoffed.

"You broke into my house and assaulted a security officer."

Jenna's eyes flashed.

"I pushed past him after he grabbed me."

"You stole evidence."

"Evidence my brother created because you threatened him."

Grant pointed at the pouch.

"Nathan is a thief."

"Nathan is terrified."

Jenna's voice broke on the last word.

She steadied it.

"He did what you asked for eighteen months. Then he found out you were using my mother's identity and Evelyn's identity as beneficiaries. He tried to quit."

Claire's gaze shifted to Grant.

"And?"

Jenna answered.

"Grant told him people who walk away with secrets become problems."

Grant laughed.

"That's not a threat."

"You sent two men to his apartment the next night."

Elias's expression changed.

"Who?"

"I don't know their names."

Jenna looked at him.

"But one of them works private security for Calder Ridge."

Andrew Bell, standing near the staircase, swore quietly.

Claire knew the name.

Calder Ridge was a private investment firm that had tried to buy Meridian's resort division the year before.

Grant had publicly rejected the offer.

"Why would Calder Ridge be involved?" Claire asked.

Jenna looked at Grant.

"Ask him."

Grant said nothing.

Claire felt another layer open beneath the one she had just understood.

This was not merely about money leaving the company.

Someone outside was waiting to receive something.

"The restructuring," she whispered.

Jenna nodded.

"Northstar Pacific is controlled through a management agreement with Calder Ridge."

Andrew looked stunned.

"That's impossible."

"It's hidden behind two entities," Jenna said. "Nathan built them."

Claire turned toward Grant.

"You were selling Meridian to Calder Ridge."

"No."

"Then explain it."

"It was a strategic partnership."

"Without the trust?"

"The trust was passive."

"You planned to make it passive forever."

Grant's face hardened.

"You don't understand what Meridian needs."

"Apparently it needs sixty-eight million dollars returned."

Jenna looked at Claire.

"It's more."

Silence fell again.

Claire's stomach tightened.

"How much more?"

Jenna swallowed.

"Nathan traced one hundred and twelve million over three years."

Even Elias looked surprised.

Grant shook his head.

"That's nonsense."

"Not all cash," Jenna said. "Land rights. Management contracts. Development fees. He moved value out of Meridian before moving cash."

Andrew stepped toward Grant.

"You carved up the company."

Grant pointed at him.

"I increased its value by four hundred percent."

"And decided that meant you could take whichever pieces you wanted?"

"I decided I deserved protection."

Claire almost laughed at the word again.

Protection.

Grant used it whenever he meant control.

Jenna reached into her coat and removed a small silver key.

She handed it to Claire.

"Nathan told me to give you this."

Claire turned it over.

A number was stamped along the side.

314.

"What does it open?"

"A private box at Union Atlantic Bank."

"What's inside?"

"Nathan's copy of everything."

Grant moved so quickly that Elias's guard stepped between them again.

"Give me that key."

Claire closed her fist around it.

"No."

"Claire, you have no idea what you're walking into."

"You keep saying that as if it's going to become true."

"Because it is true."

Grant looked at Jenna.

"Tell her what Nathan did."

Jenna's face tightened.

"He helped you."

"He created the mechanism."

"At your direction."

"And when he got scared, he started moving money for himself."

Jenna hesitated.

Claire noticed.

"Is that true?"

Jenna looked away.

"Nathan took money."

Grant smiled grimly.

"There it is."

Jenna turned back.

"He took six hundred thousand dollars because he thought he needed to disappear."

"Theft is theft."

"Then you should be terrified of the dictionary."

Miles made a sound that might have been a laugh before stopping himself.

Grant glared at him.

Claire looked at Jenna.

"Where is Nathan now?"

Jenna's face collapsed into fear again.

"I don't know."

Elias asked, "When did you last speak to him?"

"Forty minutes ago."

"What did he say?"

"That someone found the motel."

"What motel?"

"He was outside Baltimore."

Elias was already dialing.

Jenna continued.

"He said he was leaving through the back. Then I heard a door hit something. He told me to get the confession and take it to Claire."

Claire felt cold spread through her arms.

"Why me?"

Jenna looked at her.

"Because Nathan said your father built the only structure Grant couldn't break."

Claire touched the envelope in her handbag.

"What structure?"

Jenna shook her head.

"He didn't explain."

Grant laughed softly.

"This is becoming mythology."

Claire turned on him.

"A man is missing because of this."

"A man who stole from us."

"From us?"

She stepped closer.

"You don't get to say us anymore."

Grant's eyes dropped briefly to her bare left hand.

The absence of the ring seemed to anger him more than the accusation.

"You're making a mistake."

"Maybe."

Claire tightened her hand around the silver key.

"But for once, it's going to be mine."

Elias ended his call.

"Local police are checking the motel."

He looked at Claire.

"We need to leave for the board meeting."

Jenna shook her head.

"Not yet."

Elias frowned.

She looked toward Grant.

"There's something else."

Grant's face went still.

Jenna reached into the inner pocket of her wet coat.

She removed a phone.

Not her usual phone.

A cheap black prepaid device.

"Grant gave this to me six months ago."

Claire looked at it.

"Why?"

Jenna unlocked the screen.

"So there would be no company record of certain instructions."

Grant stepped forward again.

"Jenna."

She ignored him.

"There are voice messages."

Claire's heartbeat slowed strangely.

"About the money?"

"Some."

Jenna looked directly at her.

"Most are about you."

Grant's voice dropped.

"Don't do this."

Jenna's eyes filled with something harder than anger.

"You already did."

She pressed play.

Grant's voice filled the foyer.

"If Claire resists the competency filing, use the medication issue. Her surgery gives us enough ambiguity."

Claire stopped breathing.

The message continued.

"And make sure Evelyn remembers Claire was confused after dinner in April. We only need a pattern."

Evelyn whispered, "Oh my God."

Claire looked at her mother-in-law.

Evelyn's face had gone white.

Grant tried to speak.

No one listened.

The next message began.

"Once the court gives me temporary authority, the trust vote becomes mine. Calder gets Northstar. I get the management company. Everybody wins."

The message ended.

Claire stared at Grant.

He had no expression left to hide behind.

Elias checked his watch.

11:32 p.m.

"We have twenty-eight minutes."

Claire slipped the phone into Elias's evidence bag.

Then she turned toward the front doors.

"Let's go take my company back."

Behind her, Grant said quietly, "You won't make it in time."

Claire stopped.

"Why?"

May you like

His smile returned.

"Because the board meeting isn't the only thing scheduled for midnight."
