Marcus held Lily so tightly she could barely breathe.
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..." he whispered as tears streamed down his face.
The little girl buried her face against his shoulder, shaking uncontrollably.
"I didn't want to eat it, Daddy," she cried. "But Cassandra said if I didn't... she'd send me away. She said you didn't love me anymore."
Marcus froze.
"What did you just say?"
Lily looked at him with terrified eyes.
"She said if I told you anything... she'd make sure I'd never see you again."
Marcus slowly turned toward Cassandra.
The elegant smile she wore at every charity gala was gone.
Instead, panic spread across her face.
"Marcus, she's confused," Cassandra said, forcing a nervous laugh. "She's just a child. She has an imagination."
"My imagination?" Lily sobbed. "You locked me in my room! You made me sleep without dinner! You said I had to earn food like a dog!"
Marcus's jaw tightened.
His fists trembled.
For weeks, he had blamed Lily's sadness on grief after losing her mother.
He had ignored every warning sign.
The dark drawings.
The nightmares.
The fear in her eyes every time Cassandra walked into the room.
Now every piece finally fit together.
Marcus pulled out his phone.
"What are you doing?" Cassandra asked.
He didn't answer.
Instead, he opened the security camera app connected to the hidden cameras protecting the house.
He selected the recordings from the past month.
The loading icon spun.
Then the truth appeared.
Cassandra dragging Lily across the kitchen.
Cassandra throwing away her dinner.
Cassandra placing the dog bowl on the floor while laughing.
Marcus's face went completely numb.
"This..." he whispered.
"This is who you really are."
Cassandra's confidence shattered.
"Marcus, please... let me explain."
He looked at her with absolute disgust.
"No."
"I'm done listening."
He pressed one button.
"911? My name is Marcus Vale."
