CHAPTER 1: THE RULES OF THE STORM

Mara didn’t answer immediately.
She studied the four boys the way someone studies a weather report that already predicts disaster. The kitchen wasn’t just messy—it was engineered chaos. Intentional. Almost practiced.
One boy launched a spoon like a slingshot. Another was dismantling a chair cushion as if searching for something inside it. The quiet one still watched her without blinking.
Damon Cross lowered his glass slightly. “Time starts now.”
Ruth, the housekeeper, stepped back into the hallway like she wanted no part in what came next.
Mara set her bag down carefully beside the door.
Then she walked into the kitchen.
No hesitation. No warning.
The boys paused—not because she asked them to, but because she didn’t react the way every other adult had. No shouting. No fear. No bargaining.
She crouched near the cereal-box fortress and picked up a box.
“Who built this?” she asked.
A boy with frosting on his fingers grinned. “Me.”
“It collapses in a storm,” Mara said calmly. She tilted it slightly, and the entire structure folded inward like it had been waiting to fail. “Not stable.”
The grin vanished. “Hey—!”
“Try again,” she added, handing it back.
Something shifted. Not obedience. Curiosity.
Across the room, the butter-slider boy froze mid-slide.
Mara moved to the sink, turned on the water, and began rinsing orange juice off the counter without asking permission. She didn’t look at Damon once.
That, more than anything, made him quiet.
The boy on the counter leaned closer, watching her hands. “You’re not scared?”
“I don’t have time for scared,” she replied.
May you like
The quiet boy in the corner tilted his head slightly.
That was the first time he acknowledged her at all.
