CHAPTER 6 — A LIFE NO ONE COULD TAKE AWAY

CHAPTER 6 — A LIFE NO ONE COULD TAKE AWAY
Two years later...
Our home was filled with laughter instead of fear.
My son raced through the garden while my father chased after him, pretending he couldn't keep up.
Watching them together healed parts of me I once believed were beyond repair.
I returned to teaching, not because I needed the income, but because it reminded me of the woman I had always wanted to be.
With my father's support, I also founded the Valeria Foundation, providing legal aid, emergency housing, and counseling for survivors of domestic abuse.
Every woman who walked through our doors heard the same words on her first day:
"You are not alone anymore."
One afternoon, I received a letter from prison.
The return address carried Santiago's name.
Without opening it, I handed it to my attorney.
"Please destroy it."
Some chapters deserve an ending.
Not a sequel.
That evening, my son climbed into my lap and asked,
"Mommy, what's the bravest thing you've ever done?"
I kissed his forehead and smiled.
"I chose to stop being afraid."
As the sun disappeared beyond the hills of Mexico City, I realized something I had spent years searching for.
Justice had punished the people who tried to destroy me.
But forgiveness—of myself—was what finally set me free.
Because real strength isn't measured by how much pain you can endure.
May you like
It's measured by the moment you decide that enough is enough.
And from that moment forward, no one else gets to write the ending of your story except you.
