CHAPTER 11 — THE GIRL WHO CARRIED THE SECRET

CHAPTER 11 — THE GIRL WHO CARRIED THE SECRET
The chapel exploded into chaos.
Guards rushed in every direction.
Flashlights cut through the darkness.
Weapons pointed toward every corner.
But Victor Bellini was gone.
Again.
Dante stood perfectly still, staring at the empty space where his oldest friend had been standing only seconds earlier.
A man who had shared his childhood.
A man who had protected him.
A man he had trusted more than anyone alive.
A man who had just admitted knowing Elena's secrets.
"Find him," Dante said quietly.
No one moved.
The guards had heard the anger in his voice.
Not loud.
Not emotional.
Something worse.
Cold.
"Now."
Marco immediately began giving orders.
"Lock down every road."
"Check every exit."
"No one leaves the cemetery."
The guards scattered.
I stayed beside Sofia, checking her carefully.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head.
Then she looked toward the doorway where Victor had disappeared.
"He said he was sorry."
I froze.
"What?"
Sofia looked down.
"Before the lights went out."
She hugged her stuffed rabbit.
"He said he didn't want to hurt us."
Dante heard her.
His expression hardened.
"Did he touch you?"
Sofia shook her head.
"He just talked."
"What did he say?"
The little girl looked uncertain.
"That Mommy knew the truth."
Dante knelt in front of her.
"What truth?"
Sofia whispered:
"That Daddy was never the bad man."
The words hit him harder than any weapon could.
For years, Dante had carried the guilt of his family's violence.
The choices he had made.
The enemies he had created.
The danger he had brought to his wife and children.
But his daughter was telling him something different.
Someone else had been controlling the story.
I noticed something near the chapel entrance.
The paper Victor had left behind.
THE GIRL REMEMBERS.
I picked it up carefully.
The ink was still fresh.
"This wasn't written before he escaped."
Dante looked at me.
"What do you mean?"
"Someone left this here after the shooting."
Marco walked over.
"Someone else was in the chapel."
Everyone looked around.
The guards had searched the entire room.
No one had been found.
But I noticed something strange.
A small wooden box sat beneath the old altar.
It was covered in dust.
Except for one clean handprint.
Someone had touched it recently.
Dante opened it.
Inside was another photograph.
This one was newer.
My heart stopped when I saw it.
It showed me.
Not as a baby.
Not years ago.
Recently.
Walking into the Moretti mansion on my first day.
Someone had been watching me.
Before I ever arrived.
Behind the photograph was a note.
Not Elena's handwriting.
Not Victor's.
A third person.
She doesn't know what she carries.
Marco looked at Dante.
"The Raven Circle?"
Dante shook his head.
"No."
"Then who?"
Dante stared at the photograph.
"I don't know."
For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.
Not for himself.
For me.
The drive back to the mansion was silent.
Sofia and Isabella slept in the back seat, exhausted after everything they had experienced.
Dante sat beside me.
The space between us felt different now.
Less like suspicion.
More like two people trapped inside the same mystery.
"You should leave," he finally said.
I looked at him.
"What?"
"You heard me."
"After everything?"
"Especially after everything."
I laughed softly.
"You think I can just walk away?"
"I think you have no idea what you're involved in."
"I know exactly what I'm involved in."
"No, Ava."
His voice lowered.
"You don't."
He looked out the window.
"The Raven Circle destroyed families. They turned people against each other. They buried secrets so deep that entire generations died protecting them."
"And now they're after you."
"They're after whatever my grandmother left behind."
He looked at me.
"Which means they'll keep coming."
I thought about my brother.
The debt.
The fear.
The reason I entered this house.
A job.
A paycheck.
A desperate choice.
But somewhere along the way, two little girls had called me family.
"I can't leave them."
Dante looked surprised.
"Why?"
"Because nobody stayed for them before."
His expression softened slightly.
I continued.
"Everyone was afraid of their screams."
"I heard them."
"Everyone saw a problem."
"I saw two children who were terrified."
The silence that followed felt different.
Then Dante said something I never expected.
"My wife would have liked you."
I looked at him.
"That's the first kind thing you've said to me."
A faint smile almost appeared.
Almost.
Then his phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"Marco?"
His face changed.
"What do you mean the security footage recovered?"
He listened.
Then slowly stood.
"Play it."
A few seconds passed.
Dante looked at me.
"Ava..."
"What?"
His voice was quiet.
"The camera footage from the night you arrived."
"Someone accessed the system before you entered the mansion."
My stomach tightened.
"Who?"
He turned the phone screen toward me.
The recovered video showed the mansion entrance.
A black car arriving.
The door opening.
A figure stepping out.
Then the camera zoomed in.
The person waiting for me wasn't a stranger.
It wasn't a member of the Raven Circle.
It wasn't Victor.
It was my grandmother.
Lucia Romano.

Except...
She had been dead for eight years.
