Chapter 10: The Folder Labeled “Final Plan”

No one reached for the folder.

For several long seconds, everyone simply stared at it.

It rested on the hardwood floor like it had been waiting to be found.

Officer Brooks bent down first.

He slipped on a fresh pair of evidence gloves.

Then he carefully picked it up.

The bold black letters were impossible to ignore.

HOUSE TRANSFER – FINAL PLAN.

He looked at me.

"Mr. Ashford."

"Would you like to open it?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

He handed me the folder.

My fingers felt numb as I lifted the cover.

The first page wasn't a legal document.

It was a checklist.

Every item had a date beside it.

Several boxes were already checked off.

I read the first line aloud.

Move into guest room.

A checkmark.

The second line.

Gain access to household finances.

Another checkmark.

The third.

Control all incoming mail.

Checked.

The fourth.

Build trust while Colin is traveling.

Checked.

A chill ran through the room.

I turned to the next page.

My stomach dropped.

It was a monthly calendar.

Every week had handwritten notes.

Send Colin happy family photos.

Keep Evelyn from handling bills.

Tell Colin everything is fine.

Delay doctor visits unless absolutely necessary.

My voice cracked as I read the last line.

Evelyn lowered her head.

Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

Officer Brooks quietly took the folder from my hands.

"I'll continue."

He flipped to another page.

"This appears to be a written timeline."

He read aloud.

Phase One: Become indispensable.

Phase Two: Isolate Evelyn.

Phase Three: Transfer property.

The words echoed through the room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

I slowly turned toward my mother.

She looked as though she wanted the floor to swallow her.

"You planned this?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"I've never seen that folder."

Derek let out a bitter laugh.

"Seriously?"

She glared at him.

"Be quiet."

"No."

His voice grew stronger.

"I'm done lying for you."

Every relative looked at Derek.

He pointed directly at my mother.

"She wrote every page."

"I watched her."

"You did?"

Officer Brooks asked.

Derek nodded.

"She spent months working on it."

"I thought she was organizing paperwork."

"Then she started talking about the house."

My mother snapped.

"Stop talking!"

He ignored her.

"She kept saying Colin traveled too much."

"She said Evelyn didn't deserve the home."

"She said everything should stay with blood family."

I felt my chest tighten.

"So that's what this was about."

My mother finally looked me in the eyes.

"I was protecting our family's future."

"Our family?"

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Evelyn is my family."

"Jamie is my family."

"They're all that matters."

"They're not Ashfords."

The words hung in the air.

Cold.

Cruel.

Final.

Evelyn flinched as though she'd been slapped.

I stepped between them.

"Don't."

"You don't get to speak to my wife like that."

Officer Brooks continued reviewing the folder.

"There are more documents."

He removed another stack.

These weren't handwritten.

They were printed emails.

Some had been highlighted.

Others had handwritten notes in the margins.

The officer frowned.

"Interesting."

"What?"

I asked.

"These emails appear to be between Mrs. Ashford..."

He paused.

"...and someone identifying themselves as a real estate consultant."

My mother immediately spoke.

"I don't know anything about that."

Officer Brooks ignored the interruption.

"The messages discuss ownership transfers."

"Estate strategies."

"And avoiding disputes with surviving spouses."

Every sentence made my pulse race faster.

Then he reached the last page.

His expression changed instantly.

He looked directly at me.

"Mr. Ashford."

"I believe this document deserves your immediate attention."

"What is it?"

He turned the page around.

It was a typed agreement.

Unsigned.

But complete.

Across the top, in large bold letters, were the words:

CAREGIVER COMPENSATION AGREEMENT

Below that was a sentence I would never forget.

In exchange for assisting with the transfer of the Ashford residence, Derek Collins will receive $50,000 upon completion of the property transfer.

The room erupted.

"What?"

"Fifty thousand dollars?"

Aunt Gloria stumbled backward into the wall.

Uncle Raymond stared at Derek in disbelief.

Derek closed his eyes.

"I never got a penny."

Officer Brooks looked at him carefully.

"But you knew about the agreement."

Derek nodded once.

"I did."

"Did you sign it?"

"No."

"Why not?"

His answer came so quietly that almost no one heard it.

"Because I realized she wasn't just stealing a house."

He looked at Evelyn.

"...She was stealing an entire family."

Silence filled the room.

Then, from the front porch, another officer called into the hallway.

"Officer Brooks."

"I think we've found something else."

Everyone turned.

The officer held up a small fireproof lockbox.

"I found this hidden under Mrs. Ashford's bed."

Officer Brooks frowned.

"Was it locked?"

The officer nodded.

"It was."

"But there's a label taped to the lid."

He turned it so everyone could read it.

In neat handwriting, it said:

"Open only after Colin signs."

My blood ran cold.

Because I had never signed anything.

May you like

Which meant whatever was inside that lockbox...

Had been waiting for the day someone finally tricked me into doing it.
