Chapter 11: The PR War

Julian wasn't just fighting in the courtroom; he was fighting in the court of public opinion.
On Wednesday morning, my phone buzzed with an alert from a popular local gossip blog, The City Insider. The headline made my blood run cold for a fraction of a second before my tactical brain took over.
THE ICE QUEEN OF WELLNESS: How Local Tycoon Harper Caldwell Left Her Husband Penniless and Homeless.
I clicked the link. It was a thinly veiled, anonymous interview, but the source was blatantly obvious. Julian had spun a masterful tale of woe.
“I gave her the best years of my life,” the anonymous husband was quoted as saying. “I built her brand. But the richer she got, the colder she became. She treated her staff terribly. She treated me like an employee. When I finally found a moment of genuine human connection, she used her wealth to destroy my career and throw my elderly mother out on the street.”
My phone rang immediately. It was my PR director, Chloe.
"Harper, I am so sorry," Chloe said, her voice breathless with panic. "I am already drafting a cease and desist. We can issue a statement refuting this within the hour—"
"No," I interrupted smoothly. "Do nothing, Chloe."
"Nothing? Harper, this is getting shared hundreds of times a minute. Clients are asking questions. If we don't control the narrative—"
"Julian wants a public fight," I explained, leaning back in my chair. "He wants me to release an angry statement so he can point to it and say, 'Look how aggressive she is. Look how she bullies me.' If we engage, we validate his story."
"So we just let him smear you?"
"No. We change the channel." I opened a secure file on my laptop. "I am sending you an anonymous tip. I want you to route it through a dummy IP address and send it to the editor of The City Chronicle—the legitimate newspaper, not the gossip blog. Make sure it goes to their financial crimes reporter."
"What is the tip?" Chloe asked, curiosity cutting through her panic.
"It’s a copy of the police report I filed yesterday," I said, a slow smile spreading across my face. "Regarding a high-level executive at Apex Marketing who was terminated for allegedly embezzling funds and leasing properties under shell companies to hide assets from the IRS."
Silence on the line. Then, a dark, delighted chuckle from Chloe.
"The IRS?" she whispered.
"When Julian leased that luxury apartment for his mistress," I explained, "he used a shell company. But he was sloppy. He ran the initial deposit through a corporate expense account at Apex to avoid the tax hit. It’s a federal offense."
"Harper... you're going to put him in prison."
"He wanted to talk to the press," I said coldly. "I'm just giving them a better headline."
By Thursday afternoon, The City Insider gossip piece was entirely forgotten.
