Chapter 12 - The Recorder in the Teddy.

Daniel arrived at Nathan's office twenty minutes later.

Sarah did not greet him.

She pushed the certification across the conference table.

"Is that your signature?"

Daniel read the document.

His face drained of color.

"No."

"You are certain?" Nathan asked.

"I am absolutely certain."

Rebecca pointed to the date.

"Where were you that afternoon?"

Daniel looked at Sarah.

"With the divorce lawyer."

Nathan's eyebrows lifted.

Sarah stared at the false signature.

Margaret had not merely taken advantage of Daniel's doubt.

She had apparently used the exact hour of that doubt as cover.

Daniel pulled out his phone.

"The lawyer's office should have a record of my appointment."

Nathan nodded.

"Get it."

Daniel made the call.

The receptionist confirmed an archived consultation at 2:30 p.m. on the date in question.

The fake certification had been notarized at 3:05 p.m. across town.

Daniel could not have signed it there.

Rebecca sat back.

"That gives us a clean contradiction."

Sarah looked at Nathan.

"Can we stop tomorrow's board vote?"

"We can ask for an emergency injunction."

"Ask?"

"It is late notice."

Daniel spoke firmly.

"Then we make the strongest record possible tonight."

Sarah almost resented him for sounding decisive now.

Almost.

Then she remembered that anger and usefulness could exist at the same time.

They spent the afternoon gathering records.

Elise sent a sworn statement describing Margaret's submission of the unidentified sample.

Dr. Raman provided a certified copy of the current paternity result.

Rebecca produced the share-transfer documents.

Nathan prepared an affidavit regarding the signed trust amendment.

Mark provided consent for the laboratory to confirm the old male specimen belonged to him.

By evening, the story was no longer a family accusation.

It was a documented sequence.

Margaret had obtained Mark's DNA without his informed consent.

She had used it in a paternity test represented to the family as Daniel's.

She had hidden a trust amendment.

She had allowed a false certification to sit in the corporate record.

And Lily had been treated as an outsider while Margaret benefited from that fiction.

Sarah went home before dinner.

Lily was drawing at the kitchen table.

She had drawn the backyard deck in purple crayon.

The glass doors were bright yellow.

Outside stood a small girl beside a black line.

Sarah's throat tightened.

"What is this?"

"My picture from yesterday."

Lily pointed at a second figure near the door.

"That is Grandma."

Then she pointed at a tiny pink shape on the ground.

"That is Puppy Two."

"The one from Grandpa's study?"

Lily nodded.

"He records stuff."

Sarah sat beside her.

"Do you remember when you used him at Grandma's house?"

"A lot."

"Did you ever record Grandma talking?"

Lily shrugged.

"Maybe."

Sarah called Daniel.

He brought the toy home from the estate.

They copied every recording to a laptop.

Most were harmless fragments from years earlier.

Thomas reading a story.

Lily singing the alphabet.

Daniel laughing in another room.

Then they found a recording dated six months earlier.

Lily's voice whispered, "Puppy is hiding."

Fabric rustled.

A door opened.

Margaret spoke nearby.

"I do not care what Daniel believes in his heart."

Another woman answered.

Sarah recognized Jessica's voice.

"If the test is wrong, this is going to explode."

Margaret replied without hesitation.

"The test only needs to be believed until the sale is complete."

Sarah stared at Daniel.

May you like

Jessica had known.
