Detective Laura Mitchell arrived the following morning.

She wasn't interested in assumptions.

Only evidence.

She photographed every bruise.

Collected Hannah's medical records.

Asked detailed questions.

Then she requested permission to inspect our house.

I drove home with the detectives.

The moment Patricia saw the police car, her confidence disappeared.

"What is this?"

Detective Mitchell answered calmly.

"We're investigating allegations of abuse."

Patricia laughed.

"This is ridiculous."

She insisted Hannah was unstable.

Overdramatic.

Emotional.

But evidence doesn't care about opinions.

Inside the house, investigators found Hannah's cell phone.

Hidden inside Patricia's overnight bag.

Still powered off.

There were seventeen missed attempts to contact me.

None had reached me because Patricia had removed the battery from the backup phone and blocked outgoing calls on Hannah's primary device before hiding it.

Then detectives reviewed our security cameras.

I'd almost forgotten we had installed cameras after a package theft months earlier.

Patricia hadn't.

She simply didn't know one camera covered the hallway.

The footage showed everything.

Hannah slowly walking toward the front door.

Patricia stepping in front of her.

Grabbing both wrists.

Shoving her backward.

Taking her phone.

Another clip showed Hannah nearly collapsing while Patricia walked away without helping.

The silence inside the living room became unbearable.

Detective Mitchell looked directly at my mother.

"Mrs. Parker..."

"You're under arrest."

Patricia stared at me.

"Ethan..."

"You know I love you."

I looked back at her.

"I used to believe that."

She burst into tears.

"I was trying to make her stronger."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You were trying to control her."
