chap 2 The room fell silent.

The room fell silent.

Slowly, I turned toward my mother.

For just a split second, I saw it.

Fear.

Then it disappeared.

Replaced by anger.

My stomach sank.

No.

That couldn't be possible.

Could it?

"Hannah..."

My voice barely worked.

"What happened to your arm?"

She looked down.

Then looked away.

And that was the moment I became truly afraid.

Because Hannah didn't answer.

And my mother suddenly couldn't meet my eyes.

The emergency room physician took one look at Hannah and immediately ordered blood tests.

Within minutes, she was admitted.

Her fever was dangerously high.

The doctors suspected a severe postpartum infection—one that could become life-threatening if treatment was delayed.

I sat beside her hospital bed holding Owen while nurses moved quickly in and out of the room.

Hours passed.

The antibiotics slowly began bringing her fever down.

For the first time all day, Hannah looked more awake.

More alert.

Then another doctor walked in.

Dr. Melissa Grant.

She carefully reviewed Hannah's chart, asked several questions, and examined the bruises on her arms.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes remained fixed on the marks.

The room became very quiet.

"Mrs. Parker," she said gently, "can you tell me how these injuries happened?"

Hannah hesitated.

A long hesitation.

Far too long.

Dr. Grant noticed.

So did I.

The concern in her expression was unmistakable.

Finally, Hannah whispered,

"I fell."

The doctor didn't respond immediately.

She examined the bruises once more.

Her expression changed.

At that moment, I knew.

She didn't believe that explanation.

Neither did I.

Dr. Grant looked at me.

Then back at Hannah.

Finally, she asked the question that changed everything.

"Did someone hurt you?"

The room fell completely silent.
