Thirty-six hours later...
Elena opened her eyes.
Daniel was asleep beside her hospital bed.
She squeezed his hand weakly.
His eyes opened instantly.
"You're here..."
She smiled through tears.
"I knew you'd come home."
Daniel kissed her forehead.
"What happened?"
She struggled to speak.
"Your mother..."
"She said you signed everything over before leaving."
"I refused."
"They started giving me injections."
"I couldn't move."
"I heard everything."
She cried.
"I heard them planning my funeral while I was still awake."
Daniel felt rage unlike anything he'd ever experienced.
The doctor entered with wonderful news.
"The baby is stable."
"But we need to deliver him tonight."
Three hours later...
A loud cry echoed through the operating room.
Their son entered the world.
Healthy.
Strong.
Daniel held him with trembling hands.
Elena whispered,
"Let's call him Gabriel."
