Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Came Home Smiling.

The police had transformed Ethan's home by the time he returned with Richard.
Yellow evidence markers dotted the nursery floor.
A forensic technician photographed cabinets in the kitchen.
Another officer carried sealed bags from the upstairs bathroom.
The ordinary elegance of the house made everything feel worse.
Fresh flowers still stood on the dining table.
A framed wedding portrait still smiled from the foyer.
A baby swing still moved slightly near the living room window because someone had bumped it while walking past.
Ethan wanted to destroy every beautiful object in sight.
Instead, he followed Officer Ramirez into the home office.
The room had belonged mostly to Victoria.
She called it her command center.
A white desk faced the garden.
A ring light stood folded in one corner.
Ethan had teased her about it when she began posting motherhood videos online.
"You finally became an influencer," he had joked.
Victoria had rolled her eyes.
"Hardly."
Now two laptops sat open beneath police evidence tags.
Ramirez pointed to one.
"This computer contains the campaign files."
Richard remained near the door.
"Was the campaign public?"
"Some posts were."
"How did none of us see them?"
Ramirez looked at Ethan.
"The account blocked several people with your last name."
Ethan stared.
"She blocked me from seeing it?"
"Your primary accounts, yes."
The humiliation was almost as sharp as the fear.
Thousands of strangers had apparently known a version of his family he had never seen.
Ramirez opened a saved video.
"You don't have to watch this right now."
"Play it."
Richard touched Ethan's shoulder.
"Maybe you should wait."
"Play it."
The screen filled with the nursery Ethan had left only hours earlier.
Victoria sat in the rocking chair wearing a soft white robe.
Noah rested in her arms.
Her face was wet with tears.
"We had another frightening night," video-Victoria said.
Her voice was gentle and fragile.
"Our little Noah stopped responding normally again."
Ethan's fingernails pressed into his palm.
The video cut to Noah lying still in the bassinet.
Text appeared across the screen.
PLEASE HELP US FIND ANSWERS.
Another clip showed Victoria in a hospital parking lot.
"We are facing more tests than we can afford."
Ethan turned to Ramirez.
"Our insurance covers everything."
"We know."
The video continued.
A donation link appeared.
Richard sat down heavily.
"How much?"
Ramirez checked a file.
"Approximately one hundred eighty-three thousand dollars entered accounts associated with the campaign over five weeks."
Ethan felt sick.
"Where did it go?"
"Some went to personal credit cards."
"And the rest?"
"We're tracing it."
Richard spoke from behind him.
"Margaret."
Ramirez turned.
"Why do you say that?"
Richard explained the Brightwell account.
The officer listened without interruption.
When Richard finished, Ramirez wrote down the name.
"We'll look into it."
Ethan paced away from the desk.
"Where is Victoria now?"
Ramirez's expression tightened.
"That's another issue."
Ethan stopped.
"What issue?"
"She left the property before we formally restricted her movement."
Ethan stared at him.
"You let her leave?"
"At that point, we had not arrested her."
"Where did she go?"
"We don't know."
Richard muttered something under his breath.
Ethan pulled out his phone and called Victoria.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Voicemail.
He called Margaret.
No answer.
"They're together."
Richard said.
"You don't know that."
"I know Margaret."
Ethan looked at him.
"Apparently none of us knows anyone."
Before Richard could answer, a sound came from the foyer.
The front door opened.
Every officer in the office turned.
Ethan's body went rigid.
Footsteps crossed the marble floor.
Then Victoria appeared in the doorway.
She was no longer wearing the cream sweater.
She had changed into a navy dress and pulled her hair down around her shoulders.
She held a structured leather handbag in one hand.
And she was smiling.
The expression was small, composed, almost affectionate.
"There you are."
She looked directly at Ethan.
"I've been trying to reach you."
No one answered.
Victoria glanced around the room.
"This is getting dramatic."
Ramirez stepped forward.
"Mrs. Harper, where have you been?"
"With my attorney."
A man appeared behind her.
Ethan recognized him as Martin Cole, one of the most expensive criminal defense attorneys in the state.
Martin nodded once.
"My client will answer questions through counsel."
Victoria looked at Ethan again.
"Are the boys okay?"
The question nearly made him lose control.
"You know they're in the hospital."
"Of course I do."
"They found a sedating medication in their systems."
For the first time, Martin looked at Victoria.
She did not look back.
"Babies receive medications all the time."
Ethan took one step toward her.
"Not ours."
Martin raised a hand.
"Mr. Harper, I recommend that everyone keep some distance."
Ethan stopped.
Victoria's smile faded.
"You're humiliating me in front of strangers."
"You tied Claire to a chair."
"She was endangering the twins."
"The camera recorded you."
That landed.
Ethan saw it.
A tiny contraction around her eyes.
Martin turned sharply.
"What camera?"
Victoria remained silent.
Ramirez spoke.
"The nursery camera recorded the incident."
Martin's posture changed.
He lowered his voice to Victoria.
"You told me there was no video."
"I didn't know there was."
The room froze around the admission.
Victoria realized what she had said half a second too late.
Ethan felt cold satisfaction move through him.
"So you knew what happened."
Martin immediately interrupted.
"My client is not making any further statements."
Victoria's gaze sharpened at Ethan.
"You think you're clever now?"
Her voice was still quiet.
"You think one scared employee and a few confusing clips erase everything I've done for this family?"
"What did you put in their bottles?"
"Nothing."
"We have video."
"You have a video of me giving my child medicine."
"Medicine that wasn't prescribed."
"You don't know that."
"The hospital does."
Victoria's face hardened.
"The hospital knows what you told them."
Ethan looked at her in disbelief.
"You're saying I poisoned our sons?"
Martin closed his eyes briefly.
Victoria did not answer.
That was answer enough.
Richard stepped forward.
"What is Brightwell Pediatric Home Services?"
Victoria's head turned toward him.
The shift was almost imperceptible, but Ethan saw genuine alarm.
Richard continued.
"Why did seventy-five thousand dollars approved for Lucas Bennett get paid to a mailbox company registered to your mother?"
Martin looked at Victoria again.
This time his expression was openly concerned.
"What is he talking about?"
Victoria's smile disappeared entirely.
"My mother handles vendors for the outreach program."
"She owns the vendor."
"That's not illegal."
"It is if the services never existed."
Richard's voice broke with fury.
"Did you use my signature?"
Victoria stared at him.
"You signed every authorization."
Richard went pale.
She continued.
"Don't pretend you weren't happy to put your name on photographs with sick children while I did the actual work."
The accusation struck hard because it contained enough truth to wound.
Richard's mouth closed.
Victoria turned back toward Ethan.
"This family loves clean hands."
Her voice grew colder.
"Everyone wants the reputation."
"Everyone wants the charity galas."
"Everyone wants to be called generous."
She touched her own chest.
"I was the one who made it function."
Ethan stared at her.
"By stealing from sick children?"
"You don't know what I did."
"Then tell me."
Martin stepped between them.
"We're done."
Ramirez moved toward Victoria.
"Mrs. Harper, based on the video evidence and the statement from Ms. Bennett, you are being detained while we continue the investigation into unlawful restraint and child endangerment."
Victoria's face went blank.
Ethan expected anger.
Instead, she looked almost relieved.
Then she turned to him.
"Ask your mother about March seventeenth."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
Victoria's eyes held his.
"Ask Diane what she saw in this house on March seventeenth."
Two officers approached her.
Ethan stepped forward.
"What are you talking about?"
Victoria smiled again.
It was not warm this time.
"You want the truth about your family?"
May you like
She tilted her head.
"Start with the person you still trust."
