Chapter 10: Home at Last
The bank lobby was silent as William held the confidential file in trembling hands.
His mother's elegant handwriting covered the first page.
He took a deep breath and began reading aloud.
If this file is ever opened, then the truth has finally become more important than the Ashford name.
Everyone listened without moving.
Richard believed he was protecting our family's legacy. Instead, he destroyed the people he loved most. I begged him to tell the truth, but he refused. When Eleanor was forced to leave, I stayed silent out of fear. That silence became my greatest regret.
William closed his eyes.
"My mother tried to stop him..."
Judge Brooks nodded gently.
"She may not have been able to change what happened, but she left the evidence so it could one day be corrected."
William continued reading.
Thomas never abandoned Eleanor. Eleanor never abandoned William. Every letter between them was intercepted. Every lie was carefully planned to keep them apart.
Sarah squeezed Lily's hand.
"So my grandmother spent her whole life believing she'd been forgotten."
Thomas lowered his head.
"And I spent mine believing she had chosen to leave me."
The weight of thirty years of heartbreak settled over the room.
But the file wasn't finished.
Inside was one final envelope addressed simply:

William carefully opened it.
A folded property deed slipped onto the table.
Judge Brooks examined it before smiling.
"The deed transfers ownership of the Ashford Lakeside Cottage to Eleanor and all of her direct descendants."
Thomas looked surprised.
"That was Eleanor's favorite place."
William nodded.
"We spent every summer there as children."
He turned to Sarah.
"My mother wanted your family to have it."
Sarah shook her head.
"I don't want property."
William smiled warmly.
"Neither did Eleanor."
He gently folded the deed and placed it back in the envelope.
"But I think she'd want us to share it."
Sarah's eyes filled with tears.
"I'd like that."
Three months later, the Ashford family gathered at the restored lakeside cottage.
The legal investigation had confirmed that Richard Ashford had orchestrated the forged documents and intercepted Eleanor's letters. Daniel had fully cooperated with investigators, turning over every family record in his possession. Although he carried guilt for believing his father for so many years, no evidence showed that he had participated in the deception.
