Chapter 5: The Trial

Chapter 5: The Trial

Six months later.

The courtroom was silent.

Ethan entered wearing an expensive suit that could no longer hide his fear.

His defense claimed the door had malfunctioned.

That Serena had fallen accidentally.

Until prosecutors played the highway surveillance video.

Frame by frame.

The jury watched Ethan unlock the passenger door.

They watched him glance toward Serena.

Then deliberately shove the door open while the vehicle continued down the interstate.

The courtroom remained completely still.

Then another witness testified.

Ryan Carter.

He calmly described what he had seen from the adjacent lane.

He described stopping.

Calling emergency services.

Remaining at the scene.

Never once exaggerating.

Facts alone were devastating enough.

After only four hours of deliberation...

The jury returned.

"Guilty."

On every major count.

Attempted murder.

Child endangerment.

Aggravated assault.

Witness intimidation.

As deputies escorted Ethan away, he finally looked toward Serena.

She didn't lower her eyes.

She didn't cry.

May you like

She simply watched him disappear through the courtroom doors...

Forever.
